Ok, I’ve got a question for you old timer touring bike owners.

At any time has the size of the Fuel Door ever change ?

well, in the old days ya had a Gas Cap on each side. (36, 48. 54) I know my 88 had the same as now. So, not sure when they went to this, but sometime before 1988, I guess. Although I do suffer from CRS.

I’ll clarify a little better.

Im referring to the flip door on FLH models at the tank. Diameter size ?

The only thing that they have changed is instead of a key they now use a push button to open it.....My 11 came with the key[I added a push button]...My 17 came with a push button....

Overfill Vent/Drain?

Speaking of fuel tank doors... I was filing up yesterday in Jackson, WY. I usually stop when fuel reaches the black tabs, but gas kept on coming from the fuel nozzle. It ended up filling my tank to the point of overflow. I waited a few minutes thinking the fuel would drain out through the overfill hose, but it just didn't. Gas station was busy as hell and no paper towels to soak up some excess. No turkey basters... nothing. I guess I could have sacrificed a tee shirt, but I ended up putting the cap on and fuel ran all over the tank and under the chrome trim piece. I'll pull the chrome today and give it all a good cleaning and I'll check the overfill tube for plugs. It just shouldn't have happened.

In the old days that gas would peel the paint before your eyes. Still scary though. I thought my trike was gonna burst into flames. I still would have rode it home though.

Plus... does anyone think that those fuel doors are on backwards? wouldn't it be easier if the door opened the other way? Or maybe a reversible side flip option.

I always thought so.............Maybe its so if it was the other way and if in a head on the door might pop up and as you sail over the handlebars Castrate you...:D...

I have overfilled many many times. All I do is put my leg against the tank and give 4 or 5 nudges and the fuel lowers to below the inlet. Problem solved.

I did have one time waaay back in the day, the pump nozzle did not shut off and gas went everywhere. I to thought it would explode when it hit the engine, but no. Nothing happened.

I would just like the fuel door would flip over more....or just have a friken screw on cap.

I always filled my bikes 'trikes and slingshot to the very top.....As long as i knew i was going to ride at least 20 miles before i stoped. ....And i never had a problem with that...

With my Victory i put a pop-up cap [After market] similar to the sportster's oil tank cap....Im surprised someone hasn't made one for the Trike ....But then again most people like to have a big piece of chrome in top of their tank to reflect the Sun back into their eyes...:D...
