Oil showing completely full when cold?

Hi Michelle, :welcome:to Trike Talk

If you have an old Turkey baster you do not care about, stick it in the oil tank and suck some out

Too much oil is not a good thing, it will cause extra drag on the flywheels and you will end up with oil carry over into the intake

I think everybody’s getting ahead of themselves what does completely full mean when “Cold”.. Is the level on the full mark or a half inch above the full mark?? the oil should be checked when it’s warm or hot ….Not cold.. my advice to a newbie would be to the check when it’s warm or hot before you decide take any oil out…

What should I do if my oil stick is showing completely full when the engine is cold? 2015 Freewheeler

Picked up my 2016 Freewheeler last August and have done 3 oil changes since that time. The manual says 4 qts. of oil but it is really more like 3.5 or you will be overfull.

If you have to much you can get some out as suggest with a turkey baster, oil transfer pump or Mityvac.

3 weeks ago I installed the oil temp sensor into the drain bung for the new Dakota Digital speedo. If your quick you can install it without losing much oil they said. We do it all the time they said. But I dropped the sensor. Whats the use might as drain the pan all the way. Cold fill was over the mark so I sucked some out. Went on a 20 mile shakedown ride consisting of two lane and four lane. Oil temp at end of ride was 172 degrees. Hot check showed low so I added oil. Go figure.

these are dry sump engines(unless they changed)which means the oil is in a tank NOT the crankcase so the will be no extra oil to create drag

Yes, but too much oil cannot be returned to the oil pan fast enough, it will collect in the case and push out thru the breathers in the heads

please explain

why would the engine get more oil if there is some extra in the tank... i would think the pump will pump x amount of volume no matter how much is in the tank... and i dont see how any oil could be going to the sump by gravity..
