    Default Rear brake question

I recently bought an 08 GW motortrike. In a parking lot brake test should be able the lock up the rear brakes? They stop OK but will not lock up.

Similar issues with my '05 Goldwing MT. Was replacing front brakes every 20k miles. Ended up that rear brake calipers were locked up. Replaced both rear calipers about 3 years ago. I brake almost exclusively with the rear brake pedal now. BTW, those replacement calipers are not cheap!

if the bike has ABS it wont lock up. otherwise you might have a leak, air in the lines can cause all sorts of issues. also old fluid, or bad master cylinders. I have had issues with all of these from a Goldwing that sat for awhile.

Default 08 Goldwing champion trike - rear brakes

I have an 08 Goldwing Champion trike and when we were riding last weekend, seemed like I was losing power, but what actually happened is that my rear brakes locked up, solid couldn't move the bike and in the road. Husband got me going again, but was wondering if anyone else has had this happen and if so, what caused this to happen.

Also, does anyone know what brake shoes go on the rear.

Thanks in advance for any help.

There was a brake recall in 2016 I believe it was for the GL1800. Don’t know if your bike’s problem would be part of that recall but just in case you can check with a Honda dealer who will run the VIN number to see if your bike has had that recall done.

Does it have an aftermarket brake pedal or did anyone adjust the brake pedal recently ???

As stated above, there is a recall from Honda.

Champion bypasses the anti-dive valve and the secondary master cylinder so unless your master cylinder is plugged up, I suspect something with the brake pedal.

Took to Honda and supposedly they did fix recall on brakes - now the rear brakes are spongy and not stopping properly. They stopped just fine before they did recall work

Call to see what warranty they offer on the work. Brakes should always work proper after service or not be released to the owner. This is a huge liability.

Same thing happened on my GL1800 Motor Trike..just after they did the brake recall. Brakes got worse and worse and finally none.

Can’t remember exactly what my indy told me happened.. he had a conversation with the head Motor Trike technician and it was something about an obscure valve that had not been closed all the way? I never saw any signs of fluid residue on the bike or garage floor so it must have been a very slight leak. He flushed and totally checked the system, refilled, and all was good after that. Good luck with finding the problem.

I had a letter a few days ago from Honda about this recall/problem.....it say's..(the shortened version)..The check valve orifice in the GL1800 brake system is susceptible to blockage by deposits, formed due to infrequent brake system fluid changes, prolonged periods in-stock or inadequate maintenance. This deposit could cause the check valve orifice to become blocked causing rear brake drag.....

If your DFT kit came with a check valve it would be here:

Thar recall has nothing to do with the trikes rear brakes. It only applies to two wheeled Goldwings.

The recall applies to both trikes and bikes. It involves parts that are still part of the original bike (secondary master) and don't get removed with conversion.

But to the question of weak braking after recall, it is important to properly bleed the brakes. Usually the trike manufacturers provide special bleeding instructions due to modifications to the rear brakes because an extra caliper is added. But there is still one more procedure that doesn't show up in either the Honda manual or any of the trike instructions. It has been labeled the "Rocky Bleed". Many times the weak brakes are a result of some air still left in the system and the "Rocky" method helps to eliminate all the air and will probably firm up your brakes to where they should be.

Not sure if this will work but I am attaching a document that will go into further detail.

    upper brake bleed.doc

And here is the info about the recall. You can see that this is a component that is part of a GL1800 whether it is a bike or converted into a trike.

Two different dealers did the recall on my 2008 GL1800 Motor Trike, my husband’s 2008 GL 1800 Lehman Monarch II, and our friend’s 2010 GL1800 motor Trike. Both dealers had to work us in as they were so busy with other people’s Gold Wing trikes coming in for the recall. One dealer did our 2 trikes and the other did our friend’s trike. This was done in November 2016 and we had to trailer the trikes to the dealers 150 miles from us due to inclement weather. Took 3 trips as the Aluma TK1 only held 1 trike.

I've always been told that anytime a Honda is triked, all warranty and recall responsibility's are off. I am going to bring "Rocky's" method to the attention of my mechanic. Good read.

The warranty would still apply to whatever wasn't modified as a result of the conversion.

I have a 2003 that needs the recall fix. Are you saying that Honda will still preform the Recall even with the bike being triked?
