Top Box Move

I was thinking of moving the top box back about 3 or 4" so wifey could get a little more room. I have the Kawasaki Voyager with the Motor Trike Challenger kit. Has anybody ever attempted this action?

For less than $20 I move the top box back about 3" and it has made a world of difference. I will try to post pics and/or explain the process and parts needed if anybody is interested. I know only a few of us are so I won't waste my time here today without a demand. Maybe later in the Garage section?

True there are not a ton of Suzuki/Kawasaki owners here, but more than a few do read the threads they just don't post much for some reason. Please post your pics, Im sure it will be of help to someone now or in the future.

1. Remove bottom pan from inside box by pushing in the center of 4 retaining buttons and pulling them out.

2. Remove 4 8m bolts that are holding the box to the steel mount.

3. Remove 4 screws from underneath of the rear of the box in the chrome section.

4. Tip front of box up a little and slide box back enough to remove it from the chrome trim on the sides.

5. Tilt box forward onto passenger seat out of the way.

6. Remove 4 screws from the side chrome pieces and the metal mounting wings.

7. Cut off the metal mounting wings with a hacksaw even with the bolt mounts for the box. DO NOT CUT OFF THE BOLT MOUNTS! You will need these for your new brackets.

Get 2 pieces of steel 1"wide x .25" thick by 16" long. Drill a 3/8" hole 1.25" back from the end of the bar. This is where your 8m bolt goes for your front box mount. Next drill a hole the same distance back from that hole to the rear box mount. This is where your 8m bolt goes for your rear rear box mount. Now bolt this mount down in both places. NOT TOO TIGHT THAT YOU BEND IT!

9. Repeat step 8 for the other mount.

10. Measure back from your bolts 3" and drill new 3/8" holes for your box. Or you can have your passenger sit on the trike and you hold the box in place where they are comfortable and then mark the location on the new mounting bars.

( I drilled holes at 2", 3" and 4". )

11. Insert stainless steel 8M bolts (the same length as the originals) through the mounting holes in the box and the new mounting brackets. Secure with stainless steel nuts.

12. Slide the back of the chrome side pieces back on and mark the fronts for trimming to fit over the new brackets. Theses are plastic and trim easily with a Dremel tool. Or you can use a hacksaw. DO NOT CUT OFF MORE THEN YOU NEED TO! This is for the finished look. When the chrome piece fits back well then install the screws at the rear.

While holding the front of the chrome piece in its location drill a .25" hole from the box down through it. There are 2 holes in the bottom of the box up front. Use these. DO NOT DRILL YOUR HAND!

14. Insert a chrome 6M bolt through a chrome washer through the box through the chrome trim. Attach a chrome acorn nut for beauty.

15. Replace the box pan in the bottom of the box. The retaining pin in the front starboard side will not be used because of your chrome bolt. The other 3 will be.

YOU ARE DONE!

NOTE: I used Medium LocTite on all bolts. The color is blue.

I also bought all material except the LocTite from Ace Hardware. You will notice a large space between the seat and the box now. Yours may not be the same size as mine. I will make my own filler pad for that area later.
