Thread: Stock left muffler????

    Default Stock left muffler????

    I have heard reference about the left stock muffler being restricted. I have done searches on this forum and find no reference about this except one that mentions a 70% reduction of flow in the left stock muffler.

    What is the story here? I have just put my stock mufflers back on due to the wife complaining about the noise from the V&H slash cut mufflers (which I liked ) I bought her a case of ear plugs and she does not like wearing them. I still have the V&H torque headers on without a cat. I have noticed the left muffler has more black in its outlet than the right muffler.

    Is there a way to remove this restriction? Or maybe I should just get another right side stock muffler and install it on the left side? By holding my hand over either side they appear to be flowing about the same, notice I said appear. Maybe I need to use a air flow meter.

    Any ideas???????
    Rear lift kit, and tour pak relocation, Road Zepplin Air seat, Chrome front forks, SE 120 ST engine, Headers by V&H, Stock mufflers, SE 259E cams, TTS tuner and SE Air Cleaner, 58 mm Throttle Body, Tank lift, Wind Deflectors, DIY Crankcase Breather, Floorboard Ext.

    If you look up the inside of the muffler you can see the baffles, A steel rod of the correct diameter ground to a taper will enlarge the opening and open the flow up and also give you some more sound. Once it is done it is irreversible. I've opted to do this to both the mufflers on my Dyna and am satisfied with the results.
    My ride is a 2008 Harley FXD with Lehman conversion dubbed "Trilogy".

    On my stock 2011 T/G the left muffler has a cone shape restrictor in it' with a flashlight you can see it, Or take a stick and slide it in you;ll feel it.

    After i did the true duals i didn't like the sound [raspiness] So i just used an drum drill with a extension and drilled it out.

    Looked into the end of the mufflers. I also noticed the right muffler has a lot of holes that are probably around a 1/8" The left muffler has just a few holes that appear to be 1/4". They are definitely different. Wonder why they did that? I put my ear to each while idling and they sound the same. Air flow at idle appears about the same.

    With the STOCK pipes you need more back presure on the left side then on the right.

    Look at your cross over pipe where it goes under the transmission, you will see it is also squished down. I'm figuring the design of the exhaust goes with the 2.1.2 design Harley calls it, the design gives the folks who like the look of 2 mufflers that look while giving the performance of a 2.1. A good 2.1 will hit better on the bottom end and carry an nice flat torque curve.

    Just a thought Walmart sells a pink ear plug for womens small ears, they fit great and are very comfortable. Almost forget they are in. Just Saying...

    I have the V&H Power Duals & V&H Hi-Out Put mufflers.My left Muffler is always blacker than the right because the back cylinder has a richer tune than the front to keep it cool, plus its farther away so it doesn't get as hot. There is usually moisture running out that side too.

    With the V&H power dual headers the pipe going under the bike is not squished down like the stock pipe is. It is the same diameter as the pipes coming back. It does hang down a little more, but tgidestuff Dennis takes care of the problem

    Wouldn't it be easier to get a new wife???

    Having had her for 40 years now it would be hard to trade her in
