Default 06 GW CSC Service

Picked up the trike from Honda - Suzuki of Jackson, Jackson Ohio, this morning. Changed all the fluids, (brake, clutch, coolant, final drive) serviced the drive shaft, new air filter, installed new wind screen, brake recall (no charge). Out the door for under $300, not including the wind screen. These guys are good & go out of their way to explain all the work completed.

Did they do the welding of the drive shaft as recommended by CSC? I did the brake recall on mine last week and they did that also.

Wasn't required Don, as mine is a 2006 conversion, which did not have the new style driveshaft. Repacked the joints with grease and inspected the boots, gave it a clean biil of health.

Did they say what the fix was? I had mine welded up a couple of weeks ago at the dealer.

They said that they are using a different shaft...reason I called is I am getting a new viper and wanted to get the straight scoop before I purchase..you might want to give them a call and see if it applies to your trike...I dont want my shaft welded

A new engineered shaft would be the preferred method, but if welding it fixes it and I never have an issue, then I am OK with that as well. I can always install the new shaft later, at CSC expense of course.

From what I have read, I believe the Viper is the only one with the newly released shaft? Can anyone confirm that? Is it actually different from the CobraXL?
I was under the impression that the trike shaft was stripping out the wing shaft splines ..they told me that they are using a new type of spline as of middle of jan 2012...what part of the shaft was being welded? ...I cant seem to load your pics

CSC advised me to have my driveshaft welded on my '11 Cobra XL kit. I elected not to have mine welded and purchased the CV Coupler from Mtn. Trikes in N. Carolina. I believe this is a better fix than the welding. I know it's a $400 expense you shouldn't have to buy but I couldn't ride long distances not knowing when or if the driveshaft would fail and leave me stranded. I now have over 8000 miles on my Mtn. trike coupler and everything is smooth and no slop in the driveline. The rubber coupler from CSC had three severe cracks in it when I removed it and who can tell when it will fail? I've removed the driveshaft three times since installing the coupler from Mtn Trikes and regreased the forward splines and checked the CV joint and all is well. I like this fix a lot better. When I called CSC about the weld they told me that I wouldn't be able to remove the driveshaft for service without pulling the rearend back to allow clearance. I didn't like that idea either. Call Stan and Nancy at Mtn. Trikes in N. Carolina and you'll see this is a better fix than welding. Just my experience and $.02

I'm OK with the welded shaft. I have put around 12,000 miles on it since welding and it is still smooth as silk.

Thumbs up Re: 06 GW CSC Service

I just purchased a new 2013 CSC Cobra XL kit for my 2009 G/W. I contacted CSC when I read an earlier thread about the drive shaft and welding it to the splines so I figured I would question this. If you had to replace the transmission seal and the driveshaft is now welded to the splines on the output shaft, How do you replace the seal? He advised me that MY 2013 Cobra XL kit had a newly designed driveshaft. Not like the old style were they use part of your old shaft and add on their part, and that it was a solid one piece drive shaft. I will attach pic of new driveshaft. Installer stated that he liked the one piece drivshaft, but that it does make it alot harder to install the rear end due to the shaft not extending or collapsing and everthing rear end and shaft have to slide up to G/W together.Attachment 7542

So the new driveshaft does work on the older wings.
That means welding is not required.

It'd be nice to see it out of the "box" to see how they "joined" the ends together. Are they still welding these, or is it a solid machined piece?

I have a new 2013 csc cobra xl on a new 2009 gw. The rear end and the driveshaft are now the same as the viper kit. The drive shaft is a 1 piece, not welded and in order to remove the drive shaft you have to lossen up four bolts (allen heads) and then remove the u joint clamps and after that slide the differental toward the rear. Very easy process, no rocket science. You do need to remove the gravel shield first to access the u joint area. This process is needed when replacing the seal on the front of the differental (just did mine as the seal went out and slung oil everywhere) see sick trike thread.

Robval, It appears that your new driveshaft has a Circlip U-Joint on the front of the driveshaft? Are both of the U Joints replaceable? That would be a great advantage if you could replace them. Did they remove the gearbox on the rearend to fit the new Viper third member and new one piece driveshaft? I wasn't clear on what the new design was. Thanks

CSC makes a replacement driveshaft for the early style if you don't want to do the free weld. If I remember it was around $350.
