    Red face Possible electrical nightmare

I`ve had my2001 goldwing trike since Aug of last year. Yesterday it started blowing the 15 amp fuse that the audio and turn signals are on. if it was just the audio I would`t worry about it yet. But with the turns on there also i need to try to fix this. I hoping it might be a loose ground. Anybody have any ideas or experienced this same problem and could give mesome ideas on where to start. Any advice or ideas would be much appreciated. Tks Bruce

Can you give a few more details as to when the fuse blows?

You need an OHM meter to check for a short to ground. Check at the hot side of the fuse block first. If you have continuity to ground at this location, start unpluging turn signals one at a time while continuing to check for the short. If you still have a short indicated on the OHM meter after disconnecting everything, you probably have a short inside the harness. Any chance of a mouse nest under the tupperware? By the way, this is just a dumb old farm boys way of finding a leak. Good luck.

Can't you also just use a volt meter? Put one probe on the negative post of the battery and ground the other probe to the frame. If the needle moves, you have a leak.

Rsw you are correct. But I don't believe you will have isolated any one source without applying voltage to the blown fuse. Just never like to apply voltage to a possible leak, AC or DC. Most digital volt meters have the ability to check OHMs'. I burnt every wire off of a perfectly good piece of equipment 40 years ago.

</div>Couldn't you isolate the source by testing differnt circuit. If you set up the volt meter and turned on a turn signal and the meter pulsated, you would know it was in that circuit. Same as hitting the horn or turning on the radio. Just depends on how fast the fuse blows. It is also a quick way to see if you have a little short that drains a battery but not bad enough to blow a fuse. Just pull fuses till the the meter moves back to zero.

But you are very correct in not putting voltage on a short. It cost me a pick up truck once!!

Check for a bare wire. There has to be a bare wire touching a ground. Not necessily the ground. A dangling wire with a bare spot could make a intermittant hit and blow the fuse.

The OP is over a month old. I wonder if this problem is fixed by now and we just never got any feedback. Sure would be nice to see guys let the bb know of fixes they do.

The easy method would be to remove any extra wiring (trailer, and LED lights) first. Start with just the basic factory wiring. An older Goldwing probably has some extras added to the wiring harness. My trike is a 2008 and I have many extras added to the bikes wiring, but everything is run off of a separate fuse block and relays when possible. Hope you found your problem. Greg

Sry it took so long. Most of the time I go on this sight on my phone or ipod and not on the comp much.Dont like to type on these. I finnally isolated the problem as the right turn signal. At first i thought is might be the switch. i traced wire from right turn sig. and found a wire partually naked where trike kit connects to the honda part. Alll i had to do was tape the wire and route it where they can`t touch anything and no trouble since. tks for all the advice. see uall at rally Bruce

    Great news Bruce!!!

So often it the smallest thing that causes sooooooo much trouble. If it were a BIG thing it would be easy to see....

I'll be stowing that find away in my list of things to check.
