Hit a deer

My brother hit a deer while riding his Victory last week. Broke a knee, ribb, and totalled his motorcycle. He was riding at dark and two deer came out of know where. He missed the first deer and hit the second. Although this accident was avoidable, it is a reminder to be as safe as we can. After two surgeries, he is back home and expected to be out of work for 3-4 months.

I have hit a deer, right at dark, and only by the grace of God was I unharmed! The bike (2-wheel Fat Boy) needed several parts replaced or repaired, but I was able to pull out of traffic and park it on the shoulder. <br />

Reading about your brother, it brings back the emotion of that day six years ago --- and I am so grateful to still be here and happily still riding. I will be praying for your brother to heal quickly and to soon be riding again.

We live in the boonies and have hit three deer in our four wheelers but thank God not on the trike. We don't ride the trike after dark at home. We are on the road six or seven months a year in the RV with the trike and get to ride after dark so at home isn't that bad. I hate the damn deer, they have got to be as dumb as a chicken, one ran into the side of our the car.

The worry here in FL are 200-500 lb wild boar, so far so good but stock headlights and spots are LAME. Need to see Red beady Eyes and get on horn. If they are on road kill they will not move. Twice I have had them turn and charge me on foot. One put a big dent in a cattle fence. My hunting guide forgot to tell me to stay 200 ft from fence. If that Boar dies he pays 350 to Hog Haven Ranch. I am about to stick my nose into a subject many people do not agree with, so here it goes:
I have used "deer whistles" on my cars, bikes and trike and have been riding 40 years. I have come close but never close enough to take evasive action.
I have also read, these things do not work and studies have been done by universities, BUT, I look at it this way, anything is better than hitting a deer. I have been riding at dusk and deer are in the fields and watched cars go by and the deer do not turn and look, but when I came close enough, they did turn and looked at me, as to say, what is that?
So, you draw your own conclusions, I just feel this way, right or wrong.

I actually had a deer hit me two years ago in Sturgis (spearfish to be exact). IT was dusk, going thru a tight canyon, I did not see it as it was a blindside contact. Long story short- broke both bones in my lower leg, my ankle, ribs, and put a big knot on my head. Fortunately was only going 25-30 mph, or it would have been curtains for sure! Now my right leg is 1" shorter than the other, multiple surgeries, bone graphs and skin graphs. This is why I am looking for a trike!!!! I go to work in the dark and ride along the Peoria side of the Illinois river. In 2009, on the day of my Mom's funeral, I had a deer run into the side of my car on that route. Wiped out entire right side of my car. Talk about an emotional day. I just purchased the led headlight package for the 2007 street glide trike I recently bought. Hopefully the added light will help me see more of the road. <br />

Deer whistle only work at speed above 40 mph. Also they must have flow through air. A body shop told me he he pairs just as many crs. Hit by deer with and without them.

I only had one encounter with one of those Woods Rats, On a bike just a little love tap no damage and no pain But i have hit and been hit at least 9 times in my car or truck, So i did take a few of the dumb ones out of the jean pool.

I don't think noise does anything. I have seen them on the side of the road and pulled up to them and laid on the horn and they just stand there and look thru me for a minute and then run off.

I have one of the electronic (The Hornet) deer whistles on the trike. Although it has an on/off switch, I never turn it off. Does it work? Well so far I haven't had any close encounters. After hitting 5 deers over the years with various cars & trucks and seeing the damage I sustained (2 cars were totaled), I definitely wanted to take at least some precaution with the trike. I'd use my trike much more often for work but I leave very early in the AM when it's still dark and that's when our furry friends are out in force around here.

Hit a doe couple years ago in my full size truck. 3700 dollars damage. I cant imagine hitting one on my bike. I pray for your brothers speedy recovery Chiefbuc.
