    Default Clutch Ease question

I finally am getting the hang of the TG. The owner of Boswells HD took a TG across the street to an office complex that has a long road. He even rode on the bike with me. Now my question, the clutch is very hard for my old hands. When I road my Deluxe I almost could pull the clutch in with two fingers. Is there anything that can be done to ease up the clutch on the TG I have my deal all worked out, money on the way, Deluxe ready to be traded, now this with the clutch. This could be a deal breaker for me since my hands hurt from pulling in that clutch.

Get a AIM VPC clutch and easy pull ramps. It will feel like your squeezing butter afterwards

My wife went from an 08 Deluxe to an 09 Tri-glide after Chemotherapy left her hands and feet numb. Never had a problem with the Deluxe, hell of a time with the Tri. We changed the clutch springs from the ones used on the Tri to the same pull pressure as the Deluxe.... I can't remember the pull poundage off the top of my head. The dealer did it for us, no charge. Her Tri pulled as easily as the Deluxe.

PS, almost 30,000 miles later the clutch still works well. We didn't know if the additional horse power would wear out the clutch. I'm riding that trike now so it is pulling a lot more 'tonnage' now with no problems

    Good Luck

That was the one thing the dealer talked to me about was the higher HP caused HD to have to use heaver springs. I've ridden 3 different bikes and in all of them the clutch was very hard to pull in. I haven't talked to the service manager yet as to if they have been able to do anything without wearing out the clutch with lighter springs.

I had the same complaint, they put a heavier spring in the Tri Glide probably to compensate for the extra weight. I bought a clutch spring for a 2011 Electra Glide and installed it and it did the trick, smooth as silk and EZ PULL cost was about $20.

That was what I was saying, We have almost 30,000 miles on the clutch with the lighter spring and have no problems. I weigh 245# and tend to be an aggressive driver. Haven't had any problem with clutch slip.

thanks everyone, I'll ask a couple of service managers if changing the spring will keep the clutch in good shape, but will not do anything to void the warranty if the clutch goes out. That is my main concern.

Oh, did the spring have to be for a 103" or the 96"?

I just ordered a spring for a 2011 Electra Glide they are all 103 inch, my bike is a 11 that's why I said 2011 but I'm sure they are all the same. check with your dealer and you will see that there is a different part # for the Tri Glide spring and as Screwball said there is NO problem with slipping at all.

Any clutch spring from 1999 to present Twin cam will fit the Triglide, The spring installed at the factory for all 103 equipped bikes and the trike is the same spring they use with the CVO, it is right around 330 lbs. The ez pull spring they released with the 2006 MY and is still in use on all 96" Twin cams is right around 300 lbs.

Thanks Mike, I couldn't remember who clarified the clutch springs pressure on the other board. It did make a world of difference on my wife's 09. The 11 seemed to pull easier for her when we picked it up new. We just figured that they had done "something" to the newer models. We were going to have the spring changed at the first service. Maybe wife's grip got stronger.

The dealer I'm buying the TG from service manager will not change out the spring. His words, "I don't recommend it, will burn up the clutch, but its not covered under warranty so you run the risk of burning up the clutch"....wow

I would go with the AIM VPC clutch then. The VPC uses centrifugal force to put more presssure on the clutch disks as rpms increase.
I'm sure H-D would not like it installed either, as far as warranty purposes go. I removed mine temporarily when I had the 32 tooth belt pulley changed to 30 tooth. I didn't want dealer service seeing the VPC and put me on their "blacklist"!

The 11 has the same spring as the 09, could be the cable on the 11 is lubricated a little better, or as you said she could have a stronger grip, maybe from all the riding. One thing I did with my 06 Ultra when I installed the 480 lb spring was replace the cable with a Barnett which is Teflon lined, or so I was told. I went from a 380 lb SE spring with the AIM VP83 to their 480 lb spring with a VP92 and the clutch pull is almost the same as it was. Now to see if the clutch will hold the torque of the 120, I should know this week.
