Gas pump shutoff?

Whenever I fill up with gas, I just put in the number of gallons I THINK it needs as I don't trust the auto shutoff on the gas pumps. I envision raw gas pouring out of the tank, onto the hot engine, and frying my new TG.<br />

Do people use the auto shutoff on the pump and does it stop before overflowing the tank? Paranoid guy here looking for peace of mind.<br />

yes it works all the time...in fact I back the nozzle up after it shuts off and add more gas to top it off..

I never use the auto shutoff, I don't need to, I'm only putting in 5, 5 1/2 gal's in at most. Plus i don't trust them, I'm also Paranoid, For good reason, Gas over the top of a hot engine don't mix.

My Wife manages a QUIK MART SHELL......I never use the automatic shut off. They're replaced constantly/yearly at Her Store (Pump #4 Nozzle was replaced this mornin') for malfunctions as in "running over gas tanks", onto the ground, down the side of cars/trucks, over the gas tank onto the engine on Motorcycles.......might wanna' think about it next time You're doin' an "Auto-Fill-Up"........

California Pollution Cops mandate HUGE rubber gaskets on the fuel nozzles, so you can't see the gas coming up. Auto shutoff has always worked for me. Flash point of gasoline is 495*, pretty unlikely it will ignite. It will ruin your wax job!

OK I watched the video, so what does the McCuff do? Just allow the tank to be toped off? I don't see what it will do for an auto shut off that is not working.

In Conn. we have a rubber boot on some nozzles, you have to pull the boot back to fill your tank .

No offense taken, Like Guido said, hope you aren't filling a running bike, exhaust gas heat would be one of the last things that would start a fire. Exhaust gas if around 1450*, but when the bike is turned off, the head pipe falls way below the 500* point very quickly. 200 or 300* will 'boil' the gas, but not ignite it.

No, the bike I saw burn wasn't at a gas station but on a bike run. Traffic (all bikes) was stopped, wheel to wheel and all bunched up. Yes, the bikes were running waiting for the line to start moving again and this panhead had a leaking fuel line that ignited when the fuel hit whichever part of the engine. Surrounding bikes couldn't move very far away at all and fire engines couldn't get to it. Owner had to stand back and watch it burn. A real heartbreaker for him no doubt. But that was the first (and only) time I'd seen raw fuel meet hot engine and I've never forgotten it.

In the link, the temps aren't for exhaust gas heat, but for the heat of the actual exhaust pipes.......750*F near the exhaust ports would be enough for the flashpoint. Not sure how quickly it'd cool down while pumping gas, but I'm sure that I wouldn't want to chance it, LOL! And thanx for the civil debate (I'm staying out of the Hot Box from now on, ROTFLMAO!)

My ride is to expensive not to take two min out to carefully monitor the gas flow into my 2011 ultra tri glide. Be safe ,not sorry, being doing it this way for over 50 years, no damaged paint , or injuries. Take the time for safety, doesn't cost you anything.

I just hang over my gas tank like a vulture and watch it fill, albeit at a slow rate. When it's full, I stop pumping, carefully turn the nozzle as I remove it from the bung so nothing spills, and I'm good to go.
