front valve stem leak

have 09 & is garaged except when riding-"rubber" seals on valve stem are cracked & leaking air.had tire removed to access stem & obtain size for new one.my tire man,local motorcycle shop, auto parts stores "have never seen a stem that small of a diameter". i thoroughly searched the internet & could not find that stem size. called tms & was informed that Prestige Int.supplies the wheel & valve stem & was given their phone #. called (2) twice & message was "phone # is no longer in service". called tms but the purchasing agent was not in. i informed them that i will correct the situation.(iam an ex tool&die maker-machinist-machine repair welder etc) the stem hole dia.in the front wheel is .237(6mm)--hole dia. for a motorcycle tubless tire stem is .300 and the hole dia. for most cars& trucks is .453.iam going to bore out the hole for a .453 valve( if it ever needs to be replaced you can just go to an auto parts store) **for your safety: if your front tire looses pressure "soap test" the rubber washer. long thread but i hope it helps prevent any valve stem--tire inflation problems.

right after i bought my trike i noticed the stem was leaking. took the tire to town and found out it was not a standard stem, called around town and the local harley shop had three of them, bought two of them just in case. found out that they are not uncommon.

thanks trikervet & wild west-glad you could locate valve stem-i could not.good news is:TMS has "plenty" valve stems in stock(#2960) i would suggest that stallion owners carry an extra,just in case the harley shop does not have one or you are "out in the boondocks". in reference to the tube with rubber cap at lower side of radiator-my o9 does not have one at that location but there is one on the coolant pipe by the transmission dip stick. thanks again

ours also started leaking at a little over 2 years old. Small town in Tennessee. The tire shop had one. A real pain to change.

i hope that they make a longer stemmed air valve.....what a pain in the *** it is to just check the air pressure...it is hard to check it with the angle of the stem....
I want a "parts book on the stallion....i have a repair/ maintenance book on every vehicle in my yard.....

Good luck with getting one Oddoman, I guess since there aren't very many around no one wants to take the time to make one. I'm like you I like to do things myself on my vehicles and I just would like to know the proper way of taking things apart. I think the best thing about the Stallion is you can get to just about any part with just a little work. It would be nice to have a parts manual.

I agree. I know most of us would gladly buy it if they put one together. I 90 degree valve stem would be the real solution if you could find one for that diameter hole.

How hard would it be to machine the hole out to take a regular size valve stem? Then you could use the longer brass valve stems that you tighten down with a nut. I bent one of the longer ones 180 degrees on a little Toyota dully once. Just do it when you change the front tire.

Well I got bitten by the leaky valve after three years and 30k mikes!!! Bought a new tire at Sears (beat ALL local deals) for $115 out the door and brought it to a local bike shop. They did not have anything that small for valve stems, so they drilled it out and installed a angle valve ($10) pointing towards the front so it would clear the brake assembly. They used 4oz of ceramic beads for balance. $55 for that and back to the house to install the tire. All is well now and I will see how the beads hold up for balance !!! Also, the tire is a BFG Atvantage T/A now as the Traction T/A (directional) is no longer made.

I've been asked about the wear on the old tire and it was still in pretty good shape, probably another 10-15k left, but when taking everything apart, replacing the valve stem, I felt better to get the new tire. I felt it would be more costly and time wasted to have to break everything down again in a year or so. I will say though that the center was wearing more than the sides and that is due to the high tire pressure set from the factory (42). After I lowered the front shocks one setting and dropped my pressure to 38lbs, I do not notice any difference in the steering. I do notice a much smoother ride though. The manual tells you how to remove/replace the tire, but I would (did) place a 1x4 under the front tire for leverage to remove the bolts and realign the wheel assembly putting it back on.

I was out looking for a 90 degree valve stem the other day, with a new Stallion stem in hand, and was told they did not have one that small but sold me a 90 degree valve extender. Fits perfect.
