wild and wavy speedometer needle 1800.

Has anyone ever had an 1800 Wing with a speedometer that when riding the needle will wave back and forth up and down and so on?

Had one bike where the needle would flicker after reaching 75 mph, but fine below that. Since it was only at the higher speed, I just lived with it.....

GL1800 is an electronic speedometer so I suspect the head is dragging and then turning loose then repeating.... It's possible you have a dirty or faulty connector somewhere.. I suggest you get hold of a service manual so you will have wiring diagrams and connector locations....

The GL1800 does no have a mechanical speedometer. Check that the tachometer, coolant temperature gauge and fuel gauge operate properly. Do you get a fault code (FI flashing) from the engine control module (ECM)?

First thing I would try is:
Do a reset of the ECM. Remove the battery positive cable and after say 5 minutes reconnect cable (also make sure your battery cables are clean both +&-). DO NOT touch the throttle when doing this. Start bike, bike must be cold (first start of the day)let the engine warm up until the fans come on. When the fans come on turn off the bike. This should reset the ECM. Go for a ride and see if this works. If this does not work get back to me. Greg

Well somehow we fixed it but I cannot pinpoint what it was. We did not necessarily do the reset per se but after fooling quite a bit it seems to have fixed itself. Oh well as long as it is fixed.

I remember a time on another board this question was asked and was a problem on some earlier 1800's. The face of the dial may be warping and causing the needle to scrap and stick to it making it jump around.
