    Default leaking oil

    I took the Roadhawk for a good 200 mile drive. 100 miles to KC Royals Kauffman Stadium and 100 miles back.

    I parked the trike, and the next morning I had some big oil leaks under the motor. It only happens when I ride 70 plus.

    Is there a breather problem or outlet I need to know about. It doesn't appear to be a "gasket" type leak.

    I thought I would ask the much smarter VW gurus on the forum. Thnx for the help.

    Is your Roadhawk automatic or 4 speed? If automatic what color is the oil under the motor?

    It is an automatic. A friend thought it was tranny fluid, as it was darker than the engine oil.

    It also had blown over the back of the motor and cylinder covers, which in turn eventually gathered on location, and dropped to the floor.

    I have it at a VW "expert" as they say,and he is supposed to get back with me tomorrow, but I sure appreciate any suggestions or comments.

    Sounds like it is gear box oil, on top of the trannie under the fake cover[held in place by 1 large bolt] there is 2 vents for the trannie to breathe , 1 for trannie fluid in rear of trannie[red oil] and the other is for the gearbox oil[black or dark brown] If the seal between the 2 parts of the trannie go bad, it let oil into the gearbox and overfills and goes out the breater hole on top, just my guest as to why the oil all over the motor and all,<br />

    They checked the breathers, and all was good. I believe they said a pulley seal had gone bad, and they were getting one in. I'll know more Monday, thanks for the input.

    Which breathers were checked? The engine breathers or the transmission breathers? If they were looking for an engine leak, they would look at the engine breathers. I am concerned that they did not check the tranny breathers.

    VWmaqniac has a very good point. As a twenty plus year aircraft mecanic, who has maintained my own VWs, as well as my extended family's, I will concour with VWmaniac. Check the seal in the tranny.

    For your sake, I hope that they are correct and your problem is fixed. I would test it very soon after I got it back from the shop. That way if you need to have them do some warrenty work, they cannot say that it happened after their repair.

    Thanx for the help and input. It was a custom pulley seal that went out. Have one ordered and should be here in just a day or two. it was actually dripping oil from that location.

    Custom pulley seal?? There are only 1 seals on a VW Motor, the rear main seal, which in your case would be behind the flex plate and on the trannie in the same are, the torque converter seal which the converter goes onto in the trannie nose,

    If it has a sand seal pulley are the valve covers vented?

    It was a Sand Seal I believe, as a custom one had to be ordered. The valve covers are vented. Went on a 50 mile trip at 80 and no oil leaks at all.

    Great! Sounds like it is set up correctly. Some of those aftermarket pulley and seal set ups dont last very long (pulley to soft and seal to thin). Ask the mech if the pulley was grooving at the contact point of the seal.
