I'm going to start changing my oil myself. The last time I watched the guy he wedged a screwdriver in the filter to open the check valve so he could pour some oil into it. Does anyone know how to do this?

That is a bypass built into the filter..Some people do that most do not.
it just pushes in and out inside the filter.
I decided awhile back to go with a reusable filter which I have had no issues with and they are cleanable.
