I am purchasing a VW Trike which is titled as 2010 ASVE.

I called progressive to check about insurance… and they will insure it but the trike itself won’t be covered per say. If I get into an accident ( I hit a vehicle or something) and damage the bike I won’t be able to recover the lost amount of the bike… They say its because a value cant be put on it since it is a ASVE… Anyone ever heard of this… Everything else is covered. .tow/ medical / other
Does this sound right for a ASVE?

Sure they are saying that the vehicle was basicly assembled from parts and there for can not have a value from other sales of the same vehicle.

That’s basically what I hear... So that means it’s basically liability insurance right?

Have you shopped around-seems to me if some ins companies insure ATV's, I cannot help but to think it can be done!!!

Yep liability, You might find an insurance company that insures special vehicles that is willing to except an appraisal then write a policy for that amount. Look at a company that insures show cars etc.

I've insured several "Homemade" Choppers, Custom Bikes, Street Rods, VW Trikes, Dune Buggies, etc. with State Farm. Never had an issue. They take Photos at the Agent's Office (They did this on both Honda Motor Trikes also), assess a declared value, and write Full Coverage...might try a State Farm Agent.....

I have just went thru the same thing. Progressive is the only company that will insure my trike and it is liability only also. I have checked with every company and they all say no. Some said it's because it's a home built and others say it is because VW never made a trike. So for now, that is my only option also.

I'm thinking that ASVE stands for "ASsembled VEhicle. When we had the VW trike by the Trike Shop (nakers of Roadsmith now) Bikeline by Markel was happy to insure us, full coverage and a realatively reasonable price. Ap[parently they just go by Markel now.

Not an endorsement per se, we are former customers and never had a complaint. They have experience with VW trikes. Shopped around and got a better rate with our current ride from a different company.

It depend on the agent.

Have been with state farm since 1969. Had to change to another state farm agent to change from bike to trike.

Some agents are not very smart.

Have to change again, she can't find her notes. Story changed now it will not be insured as a trike, i need to keep all my papers just in case of an accident.

Original notes was bring them, she will change policy and add the trike kit and other add one's to policy.

Sometimes next week she will LET me meet the agent.

That day will never happen.

I sent a email to Low Cost Motorcycle Insurance & Discounts (BikeLine): Markel asking about insurance for a vw trike and here is their reply. If anyone wants a copy of their application, pm me your email and I will send it to you. It is in pdf and gives a quick test to see if your trike meets their apporval.

We would require an application, appraisal and five color photos of the trike (front, back, both sides and engine). The application is attached.
