Seat Comfort

My wife complains about the ride the trike has compared to the Ultra we had. She says the trike gives her a back ache when riding on longer trips. The Ultra did not. I think the trike rides rougher due to two wheels in the rear. I have installed Dennis' tour pak brackets and moved the tour pak back. I put a jell pad on her seat. When we just rode to New Orleans and back she tried a pillow also. I am running 30 psi in the shocks and 24 in the tires.

I see Harley has a new seat called the Hammock. Has anyone tried one of these or the older Air Zeppelin She ends up going to the Chiropractor when we get back from any longer trip. We stop about every hundred miles and relax.

Thanks for any input. Dave

You may seriously want to consider a Russell Day Long. So for roughly the same price as a zeppelin, you can have superior seat fitted exclusively for you. Oh ya, it looks really good on a Triglide.

I think the benifit of the Air Zepplin seat is that you can constantly adjust the pressure points which you can't do with any static seat no matter how good it is designed. That's why I will always have an AZ seat. Even my LazyBoy gets uncomfortable after so long.

I was just thinking why your wife might have a back ache on the TG and not on the Ultra. On the Ultra you are shifting your weights around due to leaning in the curves and you don't do that on the TG. Just a thought.

I have thought that the Ultra has only one rear tire and there is no rocking back and forth like with two rear tires you get the side to side bouncing on rough roads. Maybe I should just stay on Interstates, :) Maybe the leaning..

been running Mustang touring seats for years on my ultra'a and now the trike, wife says it is no different. but stock seat she hated, it was slightly tilted forward, made her slide forward, and made her lean back to hit the back rest. also, on the trike she wanted her floor boards lower than on the ultra. just thoughts

Should have mentioned that I had a leather air zeppelin on my SE Road King for about 20,000 miles. It was a really good seat, no doubt. Poor ol' thing wouldn't pump up while sitting on it, had to get off and pump it up at gas stops. Wouldn't hold air more than two days. Even with these glitches, I liked it.

Again, it was a good seat and did pretty good on 500-600 mile legs while on a 7,700 mile cross country trip. That said, even the air zeppelin got a little uncomfortable after so long at the end of the day. ;)

Next Friday I'll be going on an 8,300 mile version of the same trip. Can't wait to see how the Russell and its static design works this year. :D:D:D

TheBobs, sounds like you got a defective seat. Mine works with me on it and holds air. The only thing I'm upset about the new AZ seat is that it only has 2air bladders instead of 3 like the old one.......and of course it's the center bladder that worked great on my cyatic nerve. I hate Harley for doing that.

Still the best seat for the money in my opinion......if you are doing very long rides.....otherwise any seat will do.

How is the Legend? Worth the money? Big difference from stock?
I did notice a difference and more with two up riding...The stock shocks have a po go when going over bumps etc..Legend more absorbs the rode I find..I thought it was a good investment..
I can drove over rail rode tracks with no problems with Legend. with the stock shocks I always had to slow down and brace myself..

Hope that helps...

In my case, it's more like old seat and fat rider:laugh::laugh::laugh:

At last year's Rally in the Valley, my wife was talking with a lady who rode in from TX on a Honda trike. She remarked that the Honda must be the most comfortable ever. Her reply was shocking. She said that their previous ride was a Harley and it was more comfortable. She said they were using a HD Road Zepplin seat. On her recommendation we bought one. My wife LOVES it. I since traded for a 2012 and the seat fits the new one. We did about 400 miles last Saturday, NO COMPLAINTS! When the wife is happy, I'm very happy.

I have a Hammock seat and I love it. I had ordered a Road Zeppelin but when It arrived it was defective. That may have been a good thing because my wife didn't like it being so wide. It pushed her legs out too far. My wife has a bad back also. So far she has not complained. Here's some pictures. Larry

I have the Tall boy pillow top seat on my Road King trike. It doesn't provide enough side support for my wife.

We have a Day Long seat on order. In fact, it should be made this coming week.

We'll see how that custom seat works out.

You won't be disappointed. It's a Big seat. Kinda Zeppelinesque ;)

Another option is the Diamond custom seats. They build the seat to your needs ad also your passenger. Mark will get your height, weight and inseam, and the same for your passenger. One of the difference between Diamond and Russell, Diamond builds their basepan, you don't have to give up your old seat. I have run 4 different Diamonds on different bikes.

What type of seat is that? It looks comfortable. You Zeppelin type is it air fill? Can a backrest be used with it?

No, that's a Russell Day Long. It is VERY comfortable. It doesnt' need air to be comfortable. It works with a stock adjustable backrest.

Russell Cycle Products out of Shasta Lake, CA., custom makes the seat for each and every person they serve. I had the opportunity to drive in and have the seat made in person. Got to tour the shop and see my seat being created at each stage. The shop tour gave me insight on "how" they make such a good seat and why it's different than any other seat I've owned.

I'm leaving Friday for a long trip.

All but 3 out of 20 legs of the trip are around 500 miles.

Something like 8,300 miles.

I'll let you know if this is the best seat made then.

I ordered the Zeppelin from my HD dealer because I have been long thinking about it and they had 20% off sale on seats this week. It came in a few days to my house, tomorrow I'll install it and give my thughts at a later date.ThumbUp
