Remove rear fenders?

My wife's triglide has some deep scratches on each rear fender. Painter tells me he can make them look like new if I remove the fenders and take them to him. Can I do this? What should I be careful about? Can I remove and re-install taillights without cutting wires?

You just remove the tail light housings and the wires unplug, As far as the fenders go it's just a matter of removing a few screws, Taking off the wheels would help with that part. Mine are pretty well battered up also [2011] but i ride up some gravel roads so painting mine would be a yearly job, So I'll live with it, Gives it the well ridden look.

Yes, I do have a taillight and wheel removed. Now, a few bolts, repeat on other side, and the fenders go to the painter...Thanks for the reply.

Now, if I can only get them back on without scratching them.

Painters tape & paper should help.

Have that 3M protective film put on them before you re-install. That way you won't have to repaint! I have a few little bruses also, but I just call them love hickeys!

I certainly agree with the 3M film but I do believe I would want the paint to cure for some time period before installation of the film. Ask your painter for advice.

Get yourself some PVA (poly vinyl alcohol) also called liquid masking and glop it on with several brushed coats. Dries quick and disolves completely with with a water rinse. NAPA stores or even some FLAPS will have it. Not too expensive. You may be surprised the uses you'll find for it.
