What tunner works best for the triglide?

I have a 2012 triglide with SE 255's, V&H dresser duals head pipe and V&H pipes. The dealer installed the SERT tunner and programed it for me. The problem I am having is around 3000 rpm I get a lot of pinging. The hotter it gets the worse the pinging. I have been told by another dealer they have had problems with the SE tunners, without putting the trike on a dyno. No dealer around here has a trike dyno. I also noticed my air cleaner cover and horn have a white powder on them and are turning blue. Any help out there? Thanks

I've never seen a white powder, I have however saw the blue. I was getting blue on my horn cover when my trike was brand new and running hotter than the blue blazes.

The first thing we need to do is figure out which tuner you have because there are 3 different styles of SE tuner.

The first one is the the older Screamin Eagle Pro Super Tuner which looked like the picture below.



The recent version of the Screamin Eagle Pro Super Tuner looks like this.



Either one of these makes it a pretty simple process to take care of the pinging issue your having without a dyno. However, HD in its infinite wisdom or lack there of has a 3rd tuner option.

The Screamin Eagle Street Performance Tuner is what I call their canned map offering. The calibrations for this tuner can only be uploaded by the dealer and they have little to no changes that can be made to the tune. If you have one of these your going to have to fight with the dealer.

Call FuelMoto and tell them to send you a PCV with a canned map for your set up. My 2011 has no pinging or blueing anywhere and runs great.

I have a ThunderMax and it is great, no complaints. Put the closest map in and it learns the rest on its own. Thanks, Jerry

I'd get it back to the dealer where you purchased it, or another dealer and bitch until something is done to fix it. It isn't supposed to get that hot, it isn't supposed to ping. When they installed the cam and exhaust they must have done something wrong.

I would ditto this except make it a new Power Vision.

Extremely easy to use. No computer needed and it flashes your ECM but does not live onboard the bike.

I agree with you 100%, I'm betting they just tossed in the canned Stage 2 map and called it a day. The canned Stage 2 map does not work very well in a 1,200 lb trike equipped with the SE255 cams. Those cams are picky because of the early intake close, it timing and fuel isn't right its going to run hot as hell and ping like the dickens.

Next week my 2012 is getting V&H power Duals, V&H Trike Slip ons, A/C, SE 255 Cams, and SE Pro Super Tuner. My rear seat commander is marginally on board that our over $35K Trike with 1,000 miles needs this. But, she did warn me...as a warning directed also at the dealer... "they better not "f@&k" it up". If they do..such as it gets hot and/or pings or anything else wrong..."hell hath no fury...".

SE255s are pretty hard to tune on a Triglide. My red 2010 ran pretty good on the Stage II tune until it got hot out. I even had it dyno'd at a HD dealership. If you want the pinging to go away, you pretty much have to run it open loop at high cruise loads unless you do some serious timing adjustments. Most tuners will need several hours to properly tune the timing tables. Generally, $350 won't get your timing tables done. Just sayin'.

Your right on about running the higher KPA areas in open loop, plus some timing tweaks. I never had any pinging issues as long as I had good quality fuel. When I was out west I did have to make a choice. Pull some timing out or dose the fuel with octane booster, I choose octane booster.

Oh man, I just spent about 3 weeks east of Kansas and y'alls 92 and 93 octane was like Big Blue drinking a straight dose of crack. It didn't take long for the AFVs to reset upward. Man, it ran like a striped cat. Then I had a heck of a time when I hit 91 octane and 100 degree heat in Kansas heading west bound. Luckily I got to fill up every 125 miles and the ECU relearned by the time I hit the Rockies.

Knock on wood, my baby has been running good out here in Sturgis on 89 octane. I have a dyno tuned 103 police conversion with 510G cams stage I cleaner SE slipons a true dual exhaust. Pulls real nice out here in the 95 to 100 degrees in the Black Hills.

Have a 2012 Triglide and had the Kuryakyn "Perfect Storm" installed. Included was the TTS Master Tune set up. All of their maps were dyno generated for specific bikes. Just pipes, tuner, air cleaner. No change of cams or anything. Love the response and can cruise at 45 in 6th and still have power to pass. Only complaint is that my oil run a little hot.
