Shift Pawl Lever Free Play

Does anyone know how much free play there should be between the shift pawl lever assembly and the engine case on a 2011 103 engine (TriGlide.) I assume some free play is necessary because of engine movement on the mounts and vibration. I haven't been having any problems (except for finding Neutral when the engine is hot) but I noticed while on a trip to the Black Hills this weekend that there is about 1/4 inch of side-to-side play at the far end of the lever, and I'm wondering if this is normal. I've never looked at the assembly before, so I don't know if it has changed at all.

next time you are at a dealer check out the new linkage on the t/g.
on my '09 t/g i get about 1/8" . on mine. have you switched to either spectro or red line shockproof syn motorcycle gear lube. that helps. i order mine from i order my
r/l from HRPWORLD.COM. i also like their 20x60 syn. motorcycle oil. only place i can get the 20x60. & on these very hot days i'm glad i have it. hope this helps. lb

Funny you should mention shifter pawl. I was just looking at that on my '10 TG last weekend. I was hearing a rattle sound that was annoying me and believe that is where it is coming from. Everything feels solid enough. Just lots of play. Already scheduled for 40k service on a couple of weeks.

Make sure that arm on the trans is tight I have found them sloppy in the past. There will be some free play on that arm if everything is adjusted correctly

You should also swap out those stock heim joint ends on your shift rod ends which are notorious for failures to a swivel ball heim joint. You can order stainless steel swivel heim joints from www.McMasterCarr.com

I brought the TriGlide into the Fargo H-D dealership and indeed, the lever is very loose. A normal lever has about 1 mm of lateral free play. They have to remove the primary to replace the lever. Hopefully, the shaft isn't stripped, or it will be a much bigger repair. It's covered under warranty thankfully.
