As the summer kicks into full swing with temperatures breaking the 100 mark more frequently than ever, I can’t help but question my plan to get another trike. Some of you may have read previous posts of mine regarding how much I hate the hot weather. I’ve never had any tolerance for the heat and avoid the outdoors when temperatures head above 80. As I read the many posts in this forum, I see topics regarding Cool vests and all sorts of hydration techniques. And the most striking aspect to me is that the majority of you,, “still enjoy” riding under these circumstances! One of the main reasons I sold my Valkyrie trike was that I never rode her in the warmer weather and that was causing maintenance issues. She only had some road time in the Fall, Winter and early Spring. As much as I miss having a trike, I can’t help but question my intention to move forward with another purchase. Maybe I’m just not cut out for the true 'biker/triker' way of life. I guess my real dilemma was that I chose to move south to Virginia, (although I do love the state), instead of north. I should be up in northern Maine, lol.

Sorry for being so long winded, but I had to vent my frustration a bit as the main reason of my recent trike sale has resurfaced. So now I’m at the point where the Angel called ‘Reality’, who sits on one shoulder, is challenging the ‘Devil’ on the other shoulder who’s constantly telling telling me to; “Get a trike again, Get a trike again”. Lol,,,….

Hey, I'm always up for a mid-winter Maine ride (did it this past winter). Aside from cooling vests for summer, my personal thing is a small spray bottle filled with water. I give myself a spritz when I need it.
I say go for it and get another trike. Just carry a cooler with lots of cold bottles of water and take plenty of breaks. Or become a night owl and only venture out at night on trike.
I love riding through middle of night. Just me, the coyotes (in NYC it's Coyote Ugly's) and some energy drinks.

That's my point. I can't see riding if I'm not enjoying it and riding in the heat regardless of have a cooler or a spray bottle would still be a very uncomfortable time for me. Let me put it this way,,, riding in hot weather is worse than going to work, lol. How-ever, riding at night can be an option. And thanks for the positive reinforcement! (By the way,, that 'thanks' came form the Devil on the left shoulder.) LOL

We rode to Maggie Valley, western Pennsylvania, and home in the past three weeks, traveling partly at night. We had some hot days, yes - and nobody hates the summer heat as much as I do! - but the incentive to get where we were going was stronger than the hate. There are lots of McD's to get refreshment - I mostly got ice water, but rode without cooling vests or spritzing. (Schvitzing is something else!)

Our hot weather lasts from April until Thanksgiving. Of course, we don't have 'winter' in Central Texas (one hour of snow each January, maybe). If we didn't ride in the heat, we'd never get to ride. That is not an option!

Your decision whether or not to get a trike is solely your own - do your benefits outweigh the disadvantages? Are you going to enjoy it $30K-worth? Only your call.

Yes Blondie,,,,. That's the big question!!!! At present, I don't know the answer, or don't want to admit to the answer. (Angel & Devil are now fighting. )

I'll chime in here. I love my trike and I love my horses. I don't ride either in this heat. I look at it this way....if anyone has a problem with that so be it. My trike/horse, my choice.
It IS hot is Southern Va and very humid. Knowing I have my trike in the garage....priceless! It's there when I want, anytime I want. The horses are another story. I do feel guilty about that! I have to feed and take care of them whether I ride or not.

You, I and most of this Forum rode on 2W, didn't we? What's logical or sensible about that??? And we loved it, till for a myriad of reasons chose a 'more sensible' mode of transport & enjoyment...the trike. Ok, so back to not riding in summer...what's wrong with that? Heat is not yr cup-a-tea! Fine! I hate the heat as much as you, but am still gonna ride up to Reno in Nevada (97 degrees) on Saturday for the Western Rally. Know why? Coz I want to be at the Rally more than I enjoy the !@#$%^ heat & wearing the cooling-vest. At the end of the day, only you can decide who's 'more' right, the Angel (yuk) or the Devil (). I believe you will make the right decision for YOU!

Loving animals the way I do, I really feel for the horses in this heat.

But I do like your take on having the trike in the garage as being priceless. When I still had my Valk trike, every time I passed her in the garage I would admire her as if it was the first time. She was a real looker.

Taking care of the horses in this heat is NO FUN!!!! I have to check on them many times a day, hose them, fly spray them and worry about them. My trike is just happy as a clam with me giving her a pat as I walk by! LOL>

Even at this temp here in KY. some of June, most of July and Aug and part of Sept. is downtime except for an occasional dinner ride. If my threshold was 80* I would have serious doubts, as you do, about another trike. I probably would go with a small convertible. We have been considering this option lately.

We were considering the same thing (small convertible) but everything we looked within a reasonable price was too difficult for my wife to get in and out of. (I wasn't crazy about the entry & exit myself) We loved the Miata, but it didn't love us, lol.

Heat index (felt heat) here today will be between 105 and 110 degrees and super humid. Been that way for 10 days now and riding is out of the question. We were out of power for 5 days due to the recent storm with 75MPH winds so now that we have it back I'm gonna enjoy the air conditioning for a while more than riding the trike!!

It is hot and humid here in Central Louisiana, almost too hot to ride except early in the morning. I don't like hot weather either but got up yesterday at 5:30 and rode to breakfast and back and had an enjoyable time. It's your call, but like I said on your other post, life is too short for regrets. So, if you want it go for it if not then don't regret just get on with enjoying what ever you enjoy more.

I am the biggest "fair weather rider" you'll ever meet - don't like it too hot, too cold, or wet! I got my trike in mid to late July, 2007, and hit the 10,000 mile mark just before Maggie Valley. BUT!!! I know that when I DO want to ride, my trike is there in the garage waiting!!

What about getting a slightly older and/or used trike? One that will be there to ride on or tinker with when the urge strikes, but won't make a large dent in the finances?

Just something else for the Angel & Devil to "discuss", perhaps?

That's what I'm looking at right now Cheri, an older tike. I have another thread going regarding a 2005 GL1800 RoadSmith. We'll make a decision by mid week.
