the biggest consideration should be what you feel the most comfortable riding, your frame of mind when riding has more to do with safety than any other factor. As far as safety independent rear suspension makes the biggest difference in cornering and works much better than a solid axle. I have built both styles and was able to corner at much higher speeds with the independant rear. I have been riding since about age six and like two and three wheelers, being in the wind is what really counts

Three years ago, riding in town with two lanes going in the same direction, I was in the left lane and a driver traveling in the right lane beside me at 40MPH decided they were going to turn left. I didn't even have time to get on the brake lever and hit the other car in the drivers door. I took a flip, landed on the car hood and flew about 40 ft. down the road. I messed up my rotator cup and broke a bone in my foot, the trike was totaled. The policeman who handled the report said he was a long time rider on two wheels and he did not think I would have gotten out it without losing a leg if I had been on two. I have to agree with him, the hit was into the engine guard and right rear fender, not my leg! Yes if it was going to happen, glad I was on a trike!

After having two major motorcycle wrecks in 20 plus years. I trink trikes are safer because of a larger profile. They will not skid out from you as most bikes will. But I still Amy a very defensive rider anyway. I still would like to take the MSF trike course. No one around here is teaching it yet.

I've had my '08 gl1800 Champion up on two wheels twice. Three times if you count front whell up. You con overdrive the corners and push through a turn that you might stay in with a two wheeler. Like any other motorbike, you need to know your limits and practice safe driving. Trikers tend to be somewhat slower drivers and you cannot maneuver through traffic with the agility of a two wheeler. Head for the mountains and only the better two wheelers can get away from you. Ride safe.

if you drive and follow2 wheels harley, or car,,,then no probleme very safe
but if you try to follow 2 wheels gl1800 or sport bike then,,,probleme,,you will have to drive like you are racing,,,,

so its depenf of the 2 wheels you compare!!!!

The only "pucker moment" I've had on my TriGlide was the sudden loose rear end and fish-tailing when hydroplaning on I-94 during a heavy rainfall Otherwise, both I and my spouse feel safer on the trike.

I would agree that trikes are safer, and so apparently do the insurance companies. As I've started the conversion on my '10 Wing and added $14k in a "trike package the lizard left my premium the SAME,. Now insurance rates are based on loss statistics-higher risk/higher value= higher premium. (Think 5 year old car vs new car) Yet, in this case, higher value equals SAME premium. That basically says that the insurance company's data shows less risk vs 2 wheeler.

Yes I think that trikes are safer than bikes, thats for me anyway because I got hit head on @ 73 mph 2 years ago this July 23rd! I,ve lost some of my balance now but I,m back on em now. I built my own trike in the back-yard an have it titled+insured+plated now, but, I am for any man or woman rideing a bike or trike if so desired. I,ve built mine out of a 650 Honda-nighthawk useing a 373 geared rear-end out of a 1985 s-10 at the full width. The bike tranny is a 6sp overdrive an the gearring is great for the road with my wife and I both on the bike. I extended the rear 8 inches in length to allow for curves + corners an the ride is great !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank-you for reading this an ride safe, always watch the other guy when possible!!!! <img src="images/smilies/wave4.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Wave4" class="inlineimg" />

    1) visibility and presence on the road. People see trikes sooner than they see motorcycles.

    2) speed and agility on the road. This may be more personal than general, but I've noticed my behavior when driving a motorcycle is a bit riskier than when I'm on the trike. I pass more often and at greater speeds, move through traffic more quickly, find and take open spaces more quickly, etc.
This is what made me feel it is safer. But as I ride more I am getting braver with it and riding more like on a motorcycle now. So with the change in my riding habits now I think I am about equal safe as a motorcycle.

My trike really shines when I ride on sand or gravel covered roads, rough ground, and wet highways. Much safer than two, I have rode both for over thirty years.

Bottom line, two wheels or three, neither machine is any safer than the rider in the saddle. Treat either one with disrespect and fail to apply common sense, and well, the rest is easy to figure out. Just sayin'...

For me the trike is safer. My weak joints could not hold two wheels up but now I ride safe and just as hard as ever
