Lightbulb Re: Comfort Controls for the GoldWing 1800

For those of you 1800 Wing owners who were curious about the new Comfort Controls Roadsmith is now offering, (see link at bottom of this post) here's my own personal review.

As many of you know I brought my new (to me) 2005 Roadsmith Goldwing home this weekend. (I know,, I know, where's the pictures. Soon! ) The Comfort Controls I had them install really do make a difference in the comfort of your foot placement. Although your legs are not stretched out as they are with the Harleys, I can say that with the Comfort Controls, your feet are in a more 'natural' position and not as cramped and bent as they were with the standard configuration.

When I picked up my trike. I purposely sat on another GW trike they had on site and then back on mine. The difference was definitely noticeable. Granted, these are not cheap by any means. And I'm sure each one of us has their own definition of what level of comfort they're willing to pay for.

For me, these new comfort controls tipped the scales in favor of going with a GoldWing as I never felt comfortable with the stock foot position even on my previous Valkyrie trike.

Now to address why you haven't seen any pictures yet. That's because I have most of the side panels and other coverings off now, lol. I'm going over the trike to see what needs attention that I can handle before she goes in to the dealer for they're end-to-end servicing. I just placed a substantial order with WingStuff along with a new F4+4 windshield. Yeah, I'm in full "Upgrade Mode"! God help me!
I was wondering how much difference there would be between these and a set of floorboards with heal toe shifter. At $699 plus installation it seems that they are a bit more than the floorboards. I have floorboards and Aqua Shields and Highway pegs so I can sit in many different positions. Just thinking out loud.

Jerry, I do have to admit,,,,, I "AM" having a heck of a lotta fun!!! Can't wait for the new F4+4 windshield to get here along with the,,, little (yeah right!) package from WingStuff. They way I figure,,, I'm getting all of the additions and options I want now rather than do it piece meal over the next year or so. Especially being that I plan to retire in June. Once that happens, all of these 'Play-Time' expenditures will come to an end!

    Randy,

I'll try and get some pictures posted with close ups of the comfort controls this week if not by this evening. You'll be able to see how the shifter, brake and floor boards are moved down and forward.

I also wondered about the comfort controls but could see no advantage over the floorboards with heel-toe shifter. Especially with "switchblade" highway pegs mounted on the engine guards, which affords me three leg positions: flat on the boards, heel on boards and sole resting on the highway pegs, and finally, whole foot on the pegs, which extends the leg position appreciably (and came in VERY useful on a recent long-distance trip).

Post Re: Comfort Controls for the GoldWing 1800

Okay guys. Sorry it took so long but between a crazy work schedule and this lousy hot weather, as promised, finally here are 4 photos of the Comfort Controls (2 for each side). As you'll also see, I have the Roadsmith Wing Boards as well. Notice how close the floor boards are now positioned to the top of the Wing Boards. They almost rest on the Wing Boards.

You can see the two original stock bolts where the floor boards were originally attached to. Now as you can see, the floor boards, brake and shifter have been moved forward and down.

If you require additional photos let me know. I took these with the trike inside the garage. (Too damn hot outside ).

    Thanks for those pictures!
Now, how about a full side and 3/4 front view?
I have a Roadsmith without the aqua shields and would like to see the "with" view.

I'll take a quick picture of the trike in the garage with the view you requested and have it posted later this evening. I'm getting ready to change the windshield and install an F4+4.

Okay, as promised here's 3 quick photos of the trike. Two are different exposures of the same shot and one close up that still shows some polish residue, lol. I'm still waiting for the garage to cool down. Too dang warm in there to install my F4.

Thanks for those pictures, Rich! My bike is a 2006 GL1800, Titanium, with the Roadsmith conversion, sans aquashields or wing-guards. Now that I see what yours looks like I can visualize mine. But I'm wondering if asdding that creates a performance hit. Do you know?

What kind of 'performance hit' are you referring to? It doesn't effect the horsepower or handling and the shifting and braking have the same feeling as they do in the stock position as far as I can tell. When I picked up the trike, I purposely sat on another Goldwing/Roadsmith trike to really get a good side-by-side comparison. The leg/foot position definitely felt better with the Comfort Controls and from what I remember, the shifting and rear brake didn't feel any different. Hope this explanation helps in your decision. What you can also do is call Roadsmith and pose your question or concerns to them.
