Default Voyager Kits

Has anyone had any experience with Voyager kits? I know they may not be in the same league as a full trike conversion in some respects, but I know someone who wants one and I am curious about them.

Do a google search and you will find out some things about them, I did a lot of research when I was looking for a kit for my Burgman 650. I was not impressed with them from what I found out, very scary to drive they said, inside wheel lifts in turn. Wayne<br />
Friend of mine had one and he hated it. Came of the bike, needless to say he got rid of it and triked the bike. Now he is happy. Something to do with having the bike leaning, said he always felt like he was going to fall off??? Some people really like them. I guess different strokes 4 different folks.

my friend put a voyager kit on his victory vegas...says once he got use to it, he likes it.
in a turn, one of the outside wheels does come up...but, in the rear with the center
wheel you always have two on the ground in the rear...not gonna turn over !!!
paid $4,500. compared to trike $10,000 plus $1,000+ to rake front end..i guess it comes
down to what you can afford...

I ran a Voyager on my 1980 goldwing for 2 years. After my wife took one ride on it she didn't want another. The bike tips oppsite the direction you expect. I was lucky, I bought a brand new one set up for a 1983 goldwing for $2,000 . A guy bought it for his wife she didn't like it after 600 miles so he sold it and paid the shipping . I sold it 2 years later for what I paid for it and bought my DFT trike . wife now BEGS to ride.

Make him a deal Zook, and tell him to keep saving his lunch money.. I'm like some of the others, I've seen others ride them and it really reminded me of a kid riding their first bike with training wheels. Myself, I don't think I could enjoy it. Since I've gotten "older", that's the very reason I went to a trike was the more secure feeling.

    Default Voyager Kit

I have a Voyager kit on my 84 1200 Gold Wing. I have dad the kit on it for a number of years, have put over 60 k on it and have not had any problems with it. I know it is not the same as a trike but is all I can afford. It does lift a wheel on carves but after you ride it awhile you don't even know it is doing it. Bikers riding behind me don't like it so they hang back and watch for a while but see its not going to tip over. The group I ride with have know problem with me riding second or third in a group eight to ten bikes.
I guess that I am tiring to say is if it is all you can afford then try it at one of rallies. I did and got one, have to admit it was a little spooky to start with bit after I used to it I have as much fun on it as you do your trike.

Hey brownjug, tell me, does your bike still "lean" in a turn or is it pretty rigid? I've been told that there is a specified amount of "give" built in to allow the bike to still lean a small amount. But, the person that told me doesn't own one... If you can sometime, post us some pics of it. maybe a couple of close-ups. Ride safe.

    Default Voyager Kit

Triker jim Mine has a lot of lean, of course if I am in a curve to the left I and my better half both lean to the left and the bike leans to the right now I know this sounds bad but it is not as we are leaning about the same amount as someone on a two wheel bike. Kind of hard to explain. I have not had any problems staying with any group in the twists all thow my better half don't like the twists but she don't like them on two whees either. As for pictures I do not have any Right now but well take some soon.

    Default leaning

I just put on a Voyager kit. My bike is pretty rigid but there is a very mild lean depending on how you setup the pre-load. Mild 80 mph curves are still fun but slow speed twisties are hard as you seem to go around the corner on two wheels. I have read that one must be careful too as you can break the mounting bracket if too hard into a corner.

    http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/h...0423082002.jpg

I have taken this up to 90 mph and it felt pretty stable but one must go the posted speed limit on the corners.

I sold the Voyager and bought a trike, the handling is so much better and the wife is a much happier rider. The Voyager did hold the bike up like it was supposed to though.

As with any setup, you do what you think you want to do and give it a shot. I will say however, that the bolts under the kit need frequent checking, as they tend to drag on the asphalt in a dip. My friend has one, and even though it almost came off the bike ,due to a ground off bolt, it wasn't voyagers fault. It took alot of grinding to get that bad, and was in plain sight.

This too is the rub I get from those friends of mine who have owned the Voyager. The profile is very low and negotiating speed bumps and high spots is a bit testy.

That said, there seems to be two distinct groups where the Voyager is concerned. They either Love the kit or Hate it.

For myself, I think I would have a hard time getting used to it.

I've had my Voyager kit on my 93 Gold Wing since 2006 and it takes some getting used to. I have one the first ones the company made ten years ago and I've recently replaced the shocks and some time earlier one of the main bolts that holds the Voyager chassis to the belly bracket. The main bolt broke on my way to work and a fragment of the bolt held the chassis in place with a bit of slop on turns and that was how I knew something was wrong with the unit. A valuable lesson did come out of this for me and that was that I should not have used the original hardware and I should have replaced it with new. I had extracted the remaining bolt segment and used Grade 8 bolts. I check everything before every ride after that.
The fact that the wheel comes off the ground is a normal function of the Voyager. an improperly set Voyager will wear out tires & handle lousy. The units are put on wrong where the bike leans either right or left in the Voyager chassis, the Voyager chassis is offcenter to the bike, or the preload was never set or reset. When the rear tire of my Wing got a nail in it, the tire was changed and I reset the preload of the Voyager suspension.
I took the lowly Voyager on my Wing and turn it into a trophy winning trike. Yes, I do have nerve putting a fake trike in a show and the most interesting is that out over a dozen trophies it has managed to win two were for 'Best Trike' I guess the judges liked it.
Thank you,
I have had my voyager kit for a couple of months now and I like it. I have been riding a tryke for several years and had no problem with the kit. One problem with a rider going from the 2 wheels to the kit is probably the want to lean into the turn. You have to ride the bike as if it was a tryke and take the corners slower. The main reason for me to get the kit was the cost. I got a good deal on the Gold Wing but the conversion was just out of my wallet. There was no way I could handle a Wing on 2 wheels, & i loved my tryke. This way it was possibe to have a Wing & tryke at a good price. Like they say you got to do what you got to do - with what you got to do it with.
    Compromising can work out.

I had a Towpac Insta-Trike on my 600 cc Silverwing and loved it. I never had a problem with a wheel in a curve...and I could keep up with the sport bikes in our rallys.

In my opinion the Insta-Trike is a better constructed unit. Unlike the Voyager there isn't a lot of "stuff" in the under carriage or hanging off the back of the trike.

The gentleman who created the Voyager sold the business and years later created the Insta-Trike.

If I had not found the deal on my current trike I would have kept my Insta-Trike scooter.

I bought a used one for my old Ultra. The wife and I both never could get used to how it handled the corners and felt very unsafe. I found that you had to slow down in the corners and was not able to stay with the other bikes in a group. After getting a trike, we can out corner most two wheel bikes and feel very confident in any situation. The wife loves the ride of our trike and is always saying how glad she is not to be riding the voyager kit. The kits are a much cheaper choice and does keep one riding. I suggest your friend go ride a Voyager and then ride a trike. Then he can make the decision as too which way he wants to go. Riding is riding.
