I think that most riders here in West Virginia always wave. I mostly see Harleys and Goldwings on the road and the most common wave is the arm toward the ground at about 45 degrees and the thumb and two fingers extended. I ride a lot across the river in Ohio and most of the "Buckeyes" return or initiate the wave. I'll be glad when riding weather returns......that first warm day always brings out the bikes, smiles and LOTS of waves!!!

Hell, my wife thinks she is in a parade every time she cruses in the stallion giving that special slight rotating hand movement. That is why our friends call it the "Barbie Moblie" when she has it out!!! And yes I always wave to All riders except during bike week and biketoberfest as you would almost never have both hand on the bars.

I just gotta wave (when it's safe otherwise a great big nod)! Sometimes I'll initiate it, 'cept when it's a harley....been snubbed too-too often. Otherwise bike, scooter & the rare trike. Seems Kalifornians love to hi-5 us Trikes even more! Wife swears she can never remember that many waves when we were on 2 wheels!!

Always loved this little story regarding the waving & brotherhood

excerpted from "To Wave or Not to Wave: by Shalom
    Auslander

I love motorcycles, and I love riding. Like many of you, what
first drew me to bikes was not just the experience of riding, but
the feeling that I'd become part of a special community - a
brotherhood, really. Nothing calms me more than a long ride
down the interstate, waving to the members of my beloved
    clan...

...Except when I pass Harley guys. I hate Harley guys. Hate,
hate, hate. When they pass me on the highway, you know
what I do? I don't wave. With their little tassel handlebars and
the studded luggage and the half helmets - God, they drive me
    crazy.

You know who else I hate? BMW guys. Oh, do I hate those
guys. I don't wave at them either. They think they're so great,
sitting all upright, with their 180 degree German engines. God,
    I hate them.

They're almost as bad as those old bastards on their touring
motorcycles. You know what I call those bikes? "Two wheeled
couches!" Get it? Because they're so big. They drive around
like they have got all day. Appreciate the scenery somewhere
    else, Grandpa.

Oh, and Ducati guys - I don't wave at them either. Why don't
they spend a little more money on their bikes? "You can have it
in any color as long as it is red." Aren't you cool! Like they
even know what a Desmo-whatever engine is, anyway. Try
finding the battery, you Italian-wannabe racers! I never, ever
    wave at those guys.

Suzuki guys aren't much better, which is why I never wave at
them, either. God forbid they should ever wear any safety
gear. They make me so mad. Sometimes they'll speed by and
look over at me and you know what I do? I don't wave. I just
    keep going.

Please, don't get me started on Kawasaki guys. Ninjas? What
are you, twelve years old? I never wave at Kawasaki guys.

I ride a Honda. I'll wave at Honda guys, but, even then, I'll
never wave at a guy in full leathers. Never, never, never. Yeah,
like you're going to get your knee down on the New York Thruway.
Nice crotch, by the way. Guys in full leathers will never
get a wave from me, and, by the way, neither will the guys in
two piece leathers. And I'll tell you who else I'm not waving at -
those guys with the helmets with loud paint jobs. Four pounds
of paint on a two pound helmet - like I'm going to wave back at
that! I'll also never wave at someone with a mirrored visor. Or
helmet stickers. Or racing gloves. Or hiking boots.

To me, motorcycling is like a family, a close knit brotherhood of
people who ride Hondas, wear jeans and a leather jacket (not
Vanson) with regular gloves and a solid color helmet with a
clear visor, no stickers, no racing gloves and regular boots (not
Timberlands). And isn't that what really makes The Brotherhood
    of the Road so special?
It takes blood & guts to be this cool

This is an interesting topic... and something that is often discussed in Oz. A huge majority of Harley riders over here will NEVER acknowledge anything that's not a Harley, and that's not just the 1%'s. But having said that, most Harley riders that I know personally within our club (Ulysses) do not discriminate.

Must admit I rarely wave, but ALWAYS nod to any bike or trike... if they don't acknowledge me, well there you go. Doesn't really matter huh. And nods, like waves, can also have many variations. We actually had a comical discussion some time back where people discussed their own particular type of nod... it was very funny to read the BS that pours out of some helmets

Yes, I wave at everybody! We all have something in common. We all have the spirit! We all throw safety to the wind in order to enjoy ourselves! I only have one question? Why do Harley riders always dress like pirates? Sorry, i just couldn't resist the opportunity!

Yep, I'm with you Bosco, I rarely pass another bike without waving. That's just me and what I choose to do.

I'm not looking for what they do so I can't really tell you if they return the wave or not. If they do...that's their choice, and if they don't...well, that their choice too.

I'm back to nodding when I'm out on 2 wheels because she's new and bigger than my last one so I'm still getting comfortable. On the trike though I wave to everyone as long as it's safe to do so.
I have noticed that some folks don't wave to the trike though. It's not the three wheels cause some of them wave to hubby when he's got the sidecar and then not to me on the trike. Maybe I just look too scary .

When I did the Wall Escort mission, there were 5 trikes involved -- I was the only HD based. When I attempted to strike up a conversation with a Wing triker, he was a REAL wise @$$. After being used to the friendly people here, it was a bit of a shock. Lucliky, I ran into Loaner down in Laughlin & found out not all Honda guys were, for the lack of a better term, "stuck up". Even so, I find when I wave to "Wingers" here, I have yet to get a response. Maybe just a local oddity, but quite discouraging. If I don't return a wave, either I didn't see it or I'm in a situation that to do so wouldn't be safe, in which case, I nod.

If I'm riding with my Harley mates I wave a sword, and when I'm with my Honda mates, we wave our racquets

Hey, who cares what we wave, we're all on 2 or 3 wheels, doesn't really matter huh? Now why don't we all go to a tavern and have a nice cool drink of milk

I guess here in Florida we have gotten over the HD against everyone else as most everybody waves to each other except during Bike Week as you would never have both hands on the wheel. I have even seen a better turn with the HD folks when they pass the stallion, with even nice comments when at a stop light. The 1% don't wave to anybody but their own!!!.

I live in the midwest, most people are friendly. Pretty much everybody waves regardless of what you ride. The odd thing....now that i'm on 3 wheels the only people who don't wave are my fellow trikers. Maybe it's because I have two wheels in front? That's ok, for some reason people ignored me when I used to ride the Suzuki as well. But everybody responded to the Sapero. No matter, I still wave @ everybody & hope for the best

I wave, I get about half returned. If a two wheeler is near me at a light, they pretend they don't see me. No matter, their loss.

I wave at all, or at least nod depending on how busy my hands are at the moment. Interesting variety of waves and responses out there. One rider last weekend passed me on the interstate and practically turned around in his seat to get a good look at my ride, while he was waving at me. He was pretend high-fiving the rides in the opposite lanes. Hope he made it to his destination... One happy fellow.

Especially like the instances where the other driver ingores me but the passenger is the curteous one that waves.

    Default Re: Do U wave

I even wave at mopeds. I did notice at large a rally people stop waving at you even when you are on a ride 60 miles from rally location. Now BMW riders are non wavers around here
Only wave if it safe too
Story I heard 3 years ago . A woman and her husband were out ridding . She was a new rider . She waved to a group passing them in the opposite direction ( remember you go where you look ) she ran into the 3rd bike in the group and the 2 were killed.
