The type 3 engine is essentially the same as a VW type 1 used in the beetle, the major difference being the cooling system. Type 1 drove the cooling fan off the back side of the generator, while the type 3 drove it directly off the crank. All the tune up specs are the same for the given year regardless of type.
hey chromedome thanks, engine has dual carbs does that change anything.sorry but got to learn
Get yourself a copy of "How to Keep Your VW Alive for Dummies". It's got just about everything you need to keep you trike running.
Dual carbs can be a bit of a bear to tune, but that really depends on the brand of carb. You'll figure it out!
Hey Slick Rick, Welcome to the club!! I have not been able to get my VW Trike up and running. Time & $$.
However, I do know a bit about the type III engine as I have owned & maintained several over the last 33 years. I agree with Chromedome1964, Get "How to Keep your Volkwagon Alive A Manual of Step by Step Procdures for the Complete Idiot", a spiral bound book by John Muir. It is a lifesaver!! It costs about $20.00. I am an aircraft mechanic by trade, and I still use this book. It will give you all the advce you need on how to repair the V.W. parts and pieces of your trike.
Be sure that it is the one for the aircooled VWs. He also wrote one for the Rabbit water pumpers!
Many plusses to using a type III engine in a trike. They are a low profile "Suitcase" engine. they are shorter top to bottem then a type I. They are also a bit longer front to back. I hope to use these features to make a pick-up bed over the engine on my first trike.
As to the twin carbs, if they are the stock solex, they work well, if they are aftermarket Kadrons they work well but need more tuning (in my experiance) then the Solexs do. I have not used any other duel carb set-up. I have had good results form the stock single sidedraft carb, as well as the first generation fuel injection.
IHTH, Matt W.
