Cooling options

Been reading all the threads about methods for cooling down the triglide. Seems like the best method and most expensive is the exhaust modifications. So far i have not done that mod. I have instead tried the following, removed lower fairings and removed factory plastic heat guards and installed leather crotch cooler. On an above 85 degree day faggetaboutit. So next mod is installing engine cooling fans. Ran trike today with fans on and off. With them on the EITMS did not engage. Interesting. Still hot but cooled down a bit. Further riding on highway and around town to test out plus will reinstall lower fairings and see what happens.
Otherwise off come the headers with the cats.
P.S. relocated the horn to the front of the engine.

Which engine fans did you get? All but 3 or 4 folks will agree that the cat has to go.

I am running Jason Wards F. C. S. (see HD Forums, touring, "Best engine cooling system yet". This dissipates the top end heat and for sure helps the engine !! Yes, an oil cooler, stage one and catless header pipes are also needed. These are air cooled engines, designed for two wheels. Add the weight, rolling resistance and air drag of a trike, Yuup it's going to be one hot puppy period, that little motor is workin its butt off !
I was wanting to trike my Limited for my bride, but the warranty is of major concern to me and heat also. To buy a new HD TG @ $32,000, compared to a new full warranty 2012 Goldwing with a CSC conversion for $37,000 is a no brainier for me ! As much as it hurts to hear, a water cooled motor for a trike, is a must !! Flame suit on !!

The only thing happy on a water cooled ride is the pistons.

The only time I was really hot is when we were at the 100+ deg temps outside other than that I have been comfortable driving the bike..

Yes the headers will be removed this winter and tuned by next season..Probably cams too at some point..
Just needs to be tuned btter and bit more torgue

The fans are from wardspartwerks. Have been under the weather last couple of days but plan to ride around this week. Weather is looking real good too.
Will try running with and without lowers.

I have an 05 Ultra/Lehman so no cat. I have the HD Parade fan and an Ultracool oil cooler (18 rows and two fans). Keeps motor cool but I burn up!

With all these 90*+ days this summer, I have not encountered any heat problems - that I can't live with. Which will save me big $$$$ not having to replace the cat.
Very satisfied with what I've done.

I posted in another heat thread my experience while stuck in a traffic on the I-70 in Denver. My oil temps were steady above 300 degrees. Head temps well above that. Both the motor and I were most unhappy!

Lakeman, you can bet your ass I ride in traffic. I also went through DC for Rolling Thunder in 100* temp and stop and go(mostly stop) traffic (if you've ever been there you'll know what I mean. I also do a lot of charity group riding - lot of slow stop and go riding.

So far I am fine with the heat problem. Everyone has a different tolerance level for heat - mine must be higher then yours.

There's no way I'm going to remove the cat unless someone does it for me at no cost.

I'm not even sure the changes I made were really necessary since I had the changes done over the winter and didn't ride it last summer(bought it late in the year). I was scared from reading all the posts on the forum so I had the A/C, tuner and pipes done.

Nope, didn't hurt it. I'm picking it up from the shop and they didn't find anything but a leaky clutch cable and a faulty iPod interface plug. But motor survived the trip. OBTW, I told them what happened on the westbound leg of my cross country trip, so they were looking for issues.
The FCS and Jagg combo are making the motor very happy now. As for me, I was always tuff enough!
