Default Some of my fave "reverse trikes"

These were the style of trikes that first got me hooked, so the term "reverse" doesn't really seem to fit to me, but I guess it's better than "tadpole".

This one is more of a one off home built, but built really well!
    Veloce 3

    Sub 3 Wheeler

    Blackjack Zero

And my personal favorite, the T Rex.

Anyone considering a reverse trike for serious touring and/or track work would be well advised to take a look at the Grinnall Scorpion 111. There are fewer that 30 in the U S but there is a network of owners/builders here who are most helpful to each other.

Grinnall was going to be in my next post. I didn't want to be a "post hog" right off the bat! They have some new stuff if anyone hasn't checked them out lately. Even a 4 wheeled Scorpion!!

    This Triumph RT3 is nice!

Yup. The S4 would be much more difficult to register in the U S than the S3 which in most states is considered a motorcycle. Though the S3 is relatively easy to register, it is still highly exclusive with fewer than 30 in the U S.

Mark Grinnall also builds conventional trikes.

    Default Reverse trikes,,,,,

I have a 2007 JZR cycle car (reverse trike). It is regestered in Florida as a motorcycle even though it sort of looks like a car. It is very much a copy of a 1930's Morgan Super Sport. It is English made with a Honda CX650 motorcycle engine. It is shaft drive to the rear wheel and has a five speed sequential gear box. There are less than 400 worldwide and only 20 on the roads in the US. Take a look at my garage photos to see what it looks like. I will make better photos soon as this storm passes. Thanks, George.

    Default Grinell

Most be some significance to the fact the Grinell calls the "Cars".

They're pretty slick looking, but I'm not sure how safe I would feel rolling down the highway at dusk in that low profile machine. Seems pretty easy to overlook.

I like that JZR reverse trike. Very unusual and rare one.

I was wondering how you shift it?

It has a five speed sequential transmission. Same pattern as a motorcycle. All the way back for first, then neutral, second, third, etc. It has a clutch, brake pedal and gas pedal. Since it has a tranny from the CX 650 Honda, there is no reverse. It weighs a little less than 800 pounds, so that is not a real problem.

Grinnall Specialist Cars builds a variety of vehicles including the S3 [reverse trike with side by side seating] the S4 which is a 4 wheel sports car as well as conventional 1F2R trikes.

The S3 uses BMW "K" motorcycle drivetrains and is considered a motorcycle in most U S states. It only weighs from about 850# to 950# depending on the drivetrain and options.

I had the same apprehension about driving an S3 at night until I got used to it. The lighting is excellent both fore and aft and side to side. It certainly isn't easy to overlook in daylight! A 5 minute fuel stop frequently takes 30 minutes or longer as folks want to take pictures and ask questions.

Smile Re: Some of my fave "reverse trikes"

I have no fear of driving my JZR at night, but my wife thinks it needs more light to the rear. She even wants me to put one of those "slow moving vehicle" signs or some kind of large flag at the rear to increase the visibility. My car is black and very low to the ground, but I still feel safe. The highest body point is about knee high the the average height man. It has one small taillight on the very rear and two additional running lights plus turn signals on the rear part of the body. I hope to see more reverse trikes on this forum. For now, I feel kind of like the lone ranger.

I would have feared arrest had I mounted a 'slow moving vehicle' sign on the S3. It definitely was not slow!

Assuming you mean the S3 (Grinnall Scorpion 111), it is available in the U S as a complete car or as a box of parts, sans drive train. The total cost depends on what you pay for the BMW donor bike. Recent builds have run in the neighborhood of $35k for a complete, touring and track ready car. It isn't quite as quick off the line as a T-Rex but it is a highly capable road vehicle with much better weather protection and more suspension sophistication by far. Go to the Grinnall Specialist Cars web site (not a link! :-)) for more details. If you are seriously interested, there is an active network of S3 owners ready with advice and help.

Do you currently have an S3, or plans to build one? I have had my JZR since June and am planning on locating a barrel back JZR to go along with my beetle back. For what it is worth, I paid 17K for my car complete.

I do not still have a S3. I sold mine last Spring and am still kicking myself for having done so. I like the JZR and other modern iterations of the Moog. I envy you.

The S3 is what I would call a modern successor to the Moog concept though it is an entirely different animal capable of long distance touring as well as highly competent track work. The chassis is more than capable of handling 300+ hp and with a soft compound rear tire, the handling is about as neutral as can be imagined for a 2f 1r platform.

OK, time to inject a little life back into this thread!

    Nice, spartan "home built".

An upcoming very cool "hotrod" Harley powered reverse trike.
