Parking Break on GL1800 Lehman Trike

I am very happy with my 2005 GL1800 Lehman Trike. The one minor problem I have had was to leave the parking brake on twice while starting out to ride. I was told by the mechanic at "East Coast Cycle Center" in Bensalem, Pa. not to use the handbrake and just leave it in first gear when you park. I now do that, but if I decided to use the brake as a backup, I will just have to remember to lower it down before I drive away. LOL. Does anyone else have any comments on using the handbrake ?

I was talking to my Honda dealer last week and he informed me that the Lehman Trike uses drum brakes for the parking brake and discs for the regular rear brakes. So I guess when I accidentally ran for a while with the parking brake on I was riding the drums not the discs. I never smelled anything burning so I presume everything is okay with the brakes and they don't grab really hard.

I also have a hand brake on my 05 Wing/Roadsmith. I'm so used to using the emergency brake on my truck that remembering to release the hand brake on the trike is kinda second nature.

I don't know what the hand brake looks like, but, could you attach a mercury switch (a switch like those in older thermostats) that would turn a little light on somewhere if the brake is on and the key switch is on?

I can see that as a possibility. A small mercury switch could be mounted under the handle. It would make an interesting project!

I'd take that idea one step further and make it a kill switch at the same time. That way you know you wouldn't forget it!!

Why add a kill switch? Tie it in to the side stand switch on the goldwing. If the lever is engaged and you place it in park, it will kill the engine so you don't have to worry. Also makes a handy lil "theft" deterrent if you splice in a hidden "kill switch"

I have a CSC with parking brake and now make sure I tighten it up so that I can hardly move with it engaged.

On my 2002 Lehman trike the hand brake is some how tied into the now removed side stand switch. Every time the hand brake is used/set the "S" is illuminated on the instrument panel. I don't always catch it but at least it's there. I usually now just leave it in 1st gear rather than use the hand brake but it's nice to have if you need it.
