    Default Compensator Bites The Dust

My dad had the typical bad compensator bang when he shut the trike off, he still has extended warranty so we loaded it up into the trailer and took it to the fine folks at Harley Davidson of Jamestown NY. The service manager agreed it was shot we left it so they could confirm it and replace it if needed. Today we picked it up with the new compensator installed, as we thought the original one was shot at 36,000 miles. They also replaced a missing and broken front motor mount bolt.

The SE Compensator 83935-09A was started on the TG series in 2011. The 40296-06A was used in 2009 and 2010.

Looked through all the years part reference to check this out... pretty sure about it.

My 12 compensator is very noisy and clunks like crazy. Nothing like my CVO.

Is there any warning signs I could look for? Any thing (besides a tear down inspection) to look at? Mines an 09 with 25000 and Id like to head off breakdowns if possible. Thanks

you will start to hear knocking noise from the primary area when you start off and then you put a strain on the motor. also may hear knocking when you shut down from the primary. you will know it when you hear it.

The compensator PN's for 09 - 11 where 83935-09 and the PN for 2012 is 83936-09a, the spring pack for 09 - 12 is 83936-09. PN 40296-06A is the compensator assembly for the 2 wheel touring from 09 - 10, for the 2011 MY they switched the entire touring line to the SE compensator.

The SE one and as it came are one in the same, just a little update for 2012. They installed the SE one because they had it on hand vs ordering the parts.

They come with the SE one from the factory, the ramps will start getting a divot worn into them. The design isn't a good one, it doesn't get the lubrication it needs and is sensitive to what lubrication is used. This is the sprocket an ramps from my 2010, they showed some wear as you can see on the spokes of the sprocket but were still serviceable at the time I had them out, so I put them back in.

Yep the same one, going to make it a habit to check them often from now on.

My top motor mount bolts & spacers fell out down at the Ralley in MV this year. The motor mount put a nice gouge in the rocker box. I found one Bolt & washer at the entrance to the motel. The HD shop replaced everything when I got back. They don't put any loctite on anything. That should be automatic. Had to have new jugs installed a couple weeks ago. Don't know if they put loctite on the motor mount bolts or not. 2011 Tri-glide.

I looked at both the MY Tech and the New Parts Ref from 2009 to 2012. The numbers I gave were the only compensator numbers I found. 83935-09A google came up with this...

The thumbnail picture is from the MT 2012 New Parts Ref... was it superseded?

Heres a pic of a used one for sale on ebay...I can see why its for sale...Lotsa wear showning on it...Ya suppose if a person was to put 45 ounces of oil in {manual states 45 dry, 38 wet} , that the compensator would maybe get the oil it needs to prevent premature wear???

The biggest thing that got my attention about the compensator was when I shut if off there was a thud type of noise. Didn't sound very good.
