Has anybody with a Harley trike had issues with the "panhard rod assembly" ?
There is a loud rattle (sounds like loose muffler) when this part fails.
I've heard of 2 people having this part fail and wondering if this is a common
problem.

hey pete, thats kinda funny.I just got back from getting a new tire put on the frt. of my trike.I have had that noise for awhile now,& when i was getting the tire replaced i had them take another look at it.(3rd time now)service manager said he was sure it was the panrod. We looked it up in the parts book,& none of the parts are replaceable, you have to order the entire assembly.aprox$180.So when i got home i took it off & the ball joints were stiff, but had a lot of play in them.I wd40 them, rotated them half way, then reinstalled.i just got back from a 10 mile ride & they are not making a noise now.I'm sure in a short time the ball joints will be shot.I'm not sure if this is warranty coverage or not.If not i'll pull it apart this winter & see if i can't locate the ball joints elsewhere.I didn't think to look to see if they were standard thread or metric, but if it starts making a noise again then i'll find out.Service manager stated that this was the first one brought to his attention.Hope this helps a bit
Depending on the year your riding it could be the rubber isolator the muffler mount goes into has backed out of its bracket. The 09's and early 10's had to short of a rubber, this would back out and make the muffler rattle.

Thank you both for the info. Upon further inquires with my dealer he stated that these 2 units were the only ones that they have run into thus far - 1 was covered under warr./other one was not (out of warr). Price quoted to me was $187 parts + 2.5 - 3 hrs. labor.
Im not 100% sure what they look like, as Iv never really paid attention to that area yet on my 09, but if they are a ball joint{heim styl end}, my sidecar had them..1 had a grease fitting the other didnt...I believe those ones were replaceable from a diff source than HD...Would a grease fitting be a good idea on them?..One can make a grease fitting happen prety easy...What does the panrod do?..Similar to a automive stabilzer bar?
Note:..my 09 kept slipping the muffler hanger rubbers out...I put em in place and wrap a zip tye threw them...Works perfect..No more sliding out and rattling...Lotsa folks slid there mufflers on to far as well, and it doesnt allow movement , thus another rattle or forces rubber outa mount..
There is no way this will take 2.5 to 3 hours labor. You could call Harley Davidson's customer service and explain you have a Triglide covered under service bulletin M1280, ask them if it should be covered under warranty since it was a preexisting condition which you had no knowledge of. This is the bulletin Click Here.

I'd imagine you should have the updated trunk seal, the updated on has ribs on the sealing surface. The 09's had a real issue with trunk leaks when they 1st came out, my dad would have to pack his stuff in trash bags to keep it dry while on a trip.
I know of no bulletins on the reverse motor.
