Default Lets See Some Rear Cylinder Heads

I haven't had a chance to snoop around other Triglides to see if they are exhibiting the same thing as my dads 09 and my former 10 did. Both or our Triglides where tuned on the dyno and running a richer than the lean 14.6 and sometimes higher AFR Harley Davidson delivers them at. I started noticing the powder coat lightening or burning off around the spark plug area including down some on the fins. I'm not sure if this is due to running 8-12 hour days on the freeway at speeds of 75 mph + during the the hot months of summer, or something else. I'm thinking its just plane not getting enough air flow across the rear cylinder while riding at those speeds.

I dont have a picture of the first heads ( sold them ) that I had on my engine for 30k miles, the rear head had no discoloration as the 2 pictures already shown.

I wonder like you, if it is related to the lower front fairings causing a different or lack of airflow at the rear head??

On my Roadglide trike I dont have lower fairings. I do use the vinyl splash guards only when its raining heavy.

I'll double check, but I don't think mine is that bad either. It won't get any worse since I now use Ward's FCS. Same thing in Dennis' picture.

Yep not quite as bad, the rear head on my 06 Ultra is still like the day I installed them. They have around 26,000 miles on them, most of the miles as a 95" build making 104hp 100ft/lbs torque, I traveled on this bike. It has been to the east coast twice and out west to SD once plus many other shorter trips. I have around 1,800 miles on the 120 now and the head still looks great.

It may be from a combination of the lowers and the big wall created by the rear fenders. The heads on my 06 Ultra which has had lowers on it up until just this year still looks like the day I got them back from the head porter. In all instances the bike was put on the dyno and tuned. I'm even running O2 sensors on it now and it is using closed loop in the cruising areas.

Does the Triglide come with the air baffle under the lower triple tree??

Another question Msoko3 Do you and your dad ride 2 up or mostly solo?? I wonder if having a passenger would also create a different air flow across the rear cylinder??

The Triglide doesn't come with a baffle under the triple tree. My dad rides 90% 2 up and I road maybe 50% 2 up and 90% pulling a trailer.

I'm starting to think its the rear cyl not getting enough air flow due to the fenders and box of the trike blocking it.

I notice no mid frame air deflectors? Did you guys remove them or did they not come with them. My 2012 doesn't seem to have them and I realized it as I installed the driver seatback adjust as msocko3 has, but they are shown in all 2012 and 2013 pics on website?

I took the plastic ones off and put on a crotch cooler from Captain Itch.

Don't care for the looks of them and they really didn't do much. I tried them when I 1st got my 10 and removed them right after I got back from my trip. My lower leg burned worse than any other part of me, they couldn't help that.

My dads has never had them on, told the dealer don't bother when it come to putting them on. The dealer has to install them as part of the setup.

After looking at these pictures harder I do believe that the white substance is from the head bolts/head covers the corrosion (Galvonic)that is taking place is causing it the run out of the cylinder heads.

It reminds me of rust on bridges where you see the bolts and nuts at the beam ..

    Just my two cents..

Dennis, Have the Capt.Itch coolers scruffed the paint on your side covers at the leading edge ? I put them on a short time ago and have been concerned about that, weather has been ugly, in fact snowing here as I write this, so havent been been able to get miles on.

Rear cylinder head looks good on wifes TG with just under 20,000 miles. Like to think its because of all the mods I did early on.
My current rides, all modified in some way.

I see nothing. One would have to look past all the other scratches and dirt on mine!!

32,000 miles and all is well. HD sells a spray for the wrinkle black on the motor, I have it but have not used it yet, $14.95 I think. They say it will make it look like new.

iaff84 when was the last time you changed your spark plugs?
