heres a question, ive been reading that if you buy a trike, or any bike for that matter in another state, you are not subject to that states sales tax, and you can get a 30 day registration so you have 30 days to ride the bike home..
is this true?
do all states do this?

Yes, But when you do register it in your home state you pay that states sales tax.
And there is usually a small fee for the temp registration tags .

Thanks Rhino..that wont be an issue for me as i will be taking the trike back to australia, we cant buy the trike here. only way to own is to buy in the USA and import it yourself.
will cost about an extra 10,000 to ship it, pay GST, and get it road legal here

I live in Idaho and purchased a new trike from a dealer in Washinton State found out Washington only does a 3 day permit. I was told that 3 days was plenty of time to get out of state. Not all states work the same so better to check out the state you plan to by in. Fred

It does not cost that to ship. You can use a 20 foot container or there are several ways. ask ???? here. I will help you. Imported a Mercedes 300 diesel new from Europe some years ago.

we ship horse carriages and motorcycle hearses to Austrailia often---20 ft container under 5000.

he was saying 10k including shipping and taxes plus inspection. i bet the taxes alone are something.

actually the big expense is getting the trike certified for the authorities. the trike has to be RAWS systen to be proven to meet ADR's (australian design rules) which, among other things, in the case of the trike the rear axle has to be widened a small amount. Also tyres have to be replaced, even if they are new. lights have to be replaced. speedo has to be converted to KPH.
the tax is 10% GST on the purchase price plus freight costs. so on a 30,000 bike thats 3,180 roughly alowing $1800 freight. the RAWS compliance with ADR,s is $5000 total 39,980
customs and quarantine is about $500, and registration to get on road about another $500
total costs on 30,000 trike =$10,980

there are a number of companys that are RAWs approved by the government to import bikes for individualls and they also have to do the compliance modifications to the bike.
RAWS means Registered Automotive Workshop Scheme thee raws complied workshops take care of the shipping and import details. Or you can buy and ship via a Non raws importer but you still can only get the bike or vehicle road legal by a raws workshop,
these workshops have to prove to the govt they can make the particular model fit the Australian design rules. So if a RAWS workshop wants to bring in a car or bike they havent done before, they must do all the work then prove it meets the rules, then they will have approval for further imports of that model.
a few years ago i bought a corvette from vegas, that cost me $4000 to ship. a bike is generally about $1000 because it takes up less room. i have 2 quotes for $1800 to ship a trike and one is from the RAWS workshop in brisbane
