Mounting EZpass Transponder on a motorcycle

I was wondering where to mount the EZpass tag on my motorcycle. After reading a couple of articles from back in 2007, I decided to post my thoughts. I was at a Harley dealer over the weekend and saw a black metal EZpass holder and a chrome metal EZpass holder. The black was $35 and the chrome was $45. I have a 2005 GL1800 Lehman Monarch II trike and I already installed the Kuryakan flat plate on the brake mount holders on the handlebars. I hung my cell phone on it in a leather holder. I then decided that I want to put the EZpass tag there instead. I went to Pep Boys today and found that they sell a black plastic tag holder for $4.95. I bougth 3 of them.

One for each of my two cars and one for the trike.

I used double back tape to hold the EZpass holder to the chrome metal bracket from Kuryakan which mounts to the two allen screws that hold on the clutch lever.(same as the other two on the right side of the handlebars, where the front brake hydraulic lever is). I just slide the tag in and out when I leave the bike. That couldn't be easier. Put it in the truck if you wish to or anywhere else you might hide it. I enclosed a couple of pics of the installation. Simple and easy. I know there are lots of other handlebar mounts that you could do the same thing with.

Please excuse the glare from the flash on the chrome areas. The closed back of the holder is double taped to the front of the bracket.

The open area faces forward and the tag just slides in as it would if you had it on your windshield.

I have the black plastic holder, like the one in the middle picture.
Got it at the dollar store, I don't remember what it cost got it about a year ago.

Works well on the T/G windshield, And with the suction cups it it can be removed easy.

I kept my handlebar holders for other things. I stuck my EZ Pass on the lower left part of the windshield and it has been there for at least four years.
The handlebars holders have my insulated cup so I can put cold water in it for summer driving and the right handlebar holder has my GPS pouch, both are Kury holders.
The cold drink holder is a blessing in the hot summer when you get stuck in trafffic and you can grab a drink for you and your SO. We have done that many times.
As for the GPS, well, you know how that goes, you need it at times when your memory lets you down (try to remember the route) as you are going some place you haven't been before.
The holders also hold my LEDs so I can see the controls at night time when traveling. CB, headlight dimmer, cruise controls, , and the other functions which do not light at night.
But, like I said many times, each person has their own idea to how the trike will function as they travel, from controls to seating.

Same here. I haven't needed to use it yet, but I already test fit that same holder with the suction cups directly under my windshield vent. Fits perfectly.

For scoots we get a little plastic box about the size of a small box of matches that has a chip in it that the EZ-tag gates can read via rf. Toss it in the tour pack and take off. For cars we get the windshield stickers.

I use to attach it to my windshield, but the plastic velcro fasteners kept snagging my towel. So first I put it in the windshield pouch, but then worried about someone taking it and I didn't want to carry it. So next I put it in one of the pouches in the trunk lid organizer and it's been there ever since, 5 years and absolutely no problems. Didn't cost an extra dime. Very cheap.
If I ever use it in my car(almost never), I just put it in my shirt pocket and I'm fine.

I keep mine inside my leather pouch that are mounted on the handlebars, never even have to take it out, reads it through the leather and I have used it many, many times, no problem..

I put it in the pouches too.....until one day I forgot and left it in the tour-pak. I didn't even realize it until later, but have left it there ever since.

This seems to have sort of been answered, I think, but -
I don't get on the turnpike enough to need an EZ Pass closest in in Oklahoma. Are they like a credit card with an RFID tag? Is it sensitive enough to put in the trunk or the locked right front pocket and be left there? Is it different in different states - do some work from your pocket, and a person in a different state has to have theirs on the windshield or somehow in view?

In New England there are many-many toll roads so EZ Pass is the way to go. When traveling, let's say to Florida, you don't have to pull over and pay a toll, most roads you can stay at highway speeds and EZ Pass will "collect" the toll for you. Many-many bridges are also tolled so you can use EZ Pass to pay the bridge toll.
You can set up an account with EZ Pass where they have a "bank" of money to use as you use EZ Pass and take it from there. You can use your credit card to automatic replenish the bank or send in money into your "bank".
It is sensitive enough to have in your pouch and you don't have to "show" it in your vehicle.

The ONLY reason I have the I-Pass is so I don't have to go through the pay lane when I'm out with a group of riders that have them. I don't use it for anything else. A few times one of my sons will borrow it. The $40 account will last me a couple years.
I wouldn't one if it was like a cell phone where you have to pay a monthly charge, or any charge for that matter.

Some friends from Belgium are here this week to present at the Mid-South M.I.L.E. , and I asked then if they had this kijnd of thing. Seems they do, with some interesting differences -
The pass automatically takes your toll, and in a lot of places there are sensors in the road that read your pass, not to charge you, but to read the time taken to travel from point A to B. If the time is too short, you were speeding and you get a nice letter in the mail informing you of your infraction, and that the fine has been taken out of your account and your license has been assesed whatever points your offense merits.
Ah...better enforcement through technology!

You are very lucky to live where you are, because here if you want to get there fast, you better pay, or you will travel the very slow roads.
During the summer months, it will take you three time the amount of time to get there if you don't pay a toll. But, that's most of New England.
I bet during a trip to DC, all the tolls will run you about $40+, so you can't get away from EZ Pass here.

I don't know why anybody would not have a pass. It doesn't cost anything and it's great if you're out riding with others that do have one. That way you're not holding up the group going through the pay lanes. I resisted getting one for years because I thought you had to pay a monthly service charge, but when I found out it didn't cost anything, other then a deposit, I got one. I don't even have to spend money for a holder. I use to keep it in my shirt pocket - then in the windshield pouch - finally in the tour pac lid organizer. Neither location failed to work.

Here is an interesting ditty:
If you commute every day (or certain number of times) on a toll road in Maine you get a discount on EZ Pass.
If you are a native in NH and you use EZ Pass, you get a discount.
All major trucking companies that travel New England use EZ Pass, and I think the Man-In-Brown (UPS) also uses EZ Pass.
There is no way of getting around it here, if want to travel, use EZ Pass!
I have four transponders for my vehicles, three for my cages and one for both motorcycles.
You are correct in traveling with a group, it slows everything down when you have to pull over and wait for the payees. I had my Brother-in-law get EZ Pass when we traveled to DC on our trikes, so we wouldn't slow down to pay the tolls. They don't travel much and he was amazed how easy it was to travel with it. It is great doing 65 MPH and rolling through the toll gates, WOW, technology at its best!
BUT, I don't like what I read about it being used to track speeders in Europe, but if you don't speed, you don't have to worry, I suppose!

I guess I will count myself fortunate - the closest toll roads to me are in Oklahoma going to Tulsa, and I much rather take and extra 15 - 30 minutes getting there on US 66 anyway.

Here in Missouri the State Constitution bans toll roads & bridges if any public money went into them. Apparently they figure as the taxpayers paid for the road already, and gas tax pays for the upkeep, you can't charge them again for driving on it.

I hate to break it to you if you live in the New York New Jersey area' Probably other places also and leave the Ez pass mounted even on non toll roads your being monitored.
Right now it's just for survey purposes. Rt 80 has Ez pass counters all though Jersey. I predict that one day all vehicles will have Ez pass type monitors in bedded in their frames, Especially electric vehicles , They have to collect the road/gas tax some how. Right now all vehicles do have Tattle Tails

Currently, my NY EZ-pass is good from IL in West to VA to South and Maine to North. I just wish other states, like Fl and TX would work things out with NY so I could use it there. As far as tracking speed, I was told years ago to watch my time crossing KS because their toll road does give out tickets if the timing says you were speeding....so I went fast, took a break to let time catch up to me and continued. Iwould have been stopping anyways.
