Hazard Flashers

Right now my new (to me) '08 GL1800 RoadSmith is in temp. storage and I can't experiment.

Do the hazard flashers work with the keys out of the ignition?

Reason is that I work in a less than desirable neighborhood, and I have to double park the trike to go in and open a very large overhead door, to get the trike inside to daytime safety. I really would like to leave some lights on, while I open the door, but there is no way I would ever leave keys in the ignition.

The trike would not last even a few seconds.

If the hazard lights do not work without the keys, has anyone ever re-wired them where they do work without keys?

I would really appreciate the help.

The OEM flashers only work with the key on. Yup, it is a two edged sword. I guess HONDA figured it better to make it so someone couldn't turn you flashers on with you absent and run the battery dead. Here is a link to a procedure you could do that would get you the "all the time flashers".

Chet's 4-way is a great idea. His web site is full of great ideas and good photographs.

I think for the time being, I'm going by Harbor Freight and buy a couple red bicycle red strobe lights and keep those in the front glove box. Then when I have to double park at night, have one face forward and one back. All I need is about 60 seconds to keep a cage from running into me, which I get a big overhead door open.

I appreaciate the feed-back I'm getting, especially on a couple of the other threads I started.

There is a wiring kit on Ebay which will allow you to use your hazard lights without the keys in. We have to have this fitted here in Scotland or it will not pass the government MOT.

If you can find the relay that powers the flashers, it will have a power wire coming in and a ground. If you CUT the power wire and solder another piece of wire to it and run this wire directly to the battery hot post, you will be able to use the emergency flashers without going through the keyed switch. I would note the wire gauge and fuse accordingly; probably 18ga wire or something similar and a 3 or 5A inline fuse would be about right.

Are you all sure you are not able to turn on flashers while key is on then turn key off with flashers staying on? At least, that is the way HD's work.
