    Default insurance information

It was suggested that we add a section covering trike insurance carriers, and their rates since rates seem to vary widely and some insurers are not familiar with trikes or trike values. If you have information that might help your fellow riders, please post it here.

I think that is a noble idea but doubt that it would be of much value since rates vary so much from place to place and from insured to insured because of so many, many factors.

Might be a good idea, just to compare what we're getting as far as coverage.I know I switched companies when I went to a trike, because the company that insured my two wheelers went to the moon on trike rates. Would be interesting to hear about claims complaints ect...

    Default Allstate in NH

I have my car covered by Allstate in NH. I tried to cover my trike with them and everything was going fine when they thought it was a stock GW. When I specified the 12k trike conversion, I was told they don't offer insurance on trikes.
The only company I have been able to find to insure the trike in NH is Progressive. Does anyone use this company? What has your experience been?

I Have Geico, but several of my buddies have Progressive and they said they have no problems. One has had a claim and he said they took good care of him. I did the same thing with Geico making sure that mine is listed as a trike. The rep told me she was writing more and more trikes everyday. She said "I think they're cool"....

    Default Insurance in NH

Thanks for the info. I think I will go with Progressive but will look into State Farm. Geico does not insure bikes in NH.

I have Foremost and it is a little over $300 a year. If U are a member of USAA insurance
U can call them they will hook U with Foremost and U will get a discount for being a USAA member.

    Default Insurance in NH

I talked to State Farm and they do insure in NH. They beat Progressive by about $50 for the same coverage.
    Thanks for the suggestion.

    Good Morning Erik. Buzzard here.

I contacted Progressive Insurance with your questions on Insuring while you are in the States and they had the following response:

First, they will insure you while you are here in the States with some limitations. I talked to a Cory in Customer Service who stated that Progressive only needed a physical address where the Trike would be "Parked". I recommend you call them. 1-877-280-8418

Some States have limitations on the International license. Progressive can help you with this also.

On which manufacturer of Bike, I'll offer an "opinion":

Although I've riden both Harley and Honda Trikes, I prefer the Hondas for a a couple of reasons. Shaft drive and available power are my two favorites.

Another is that repair parts seem to be more readily available for the Honda. (I'm about to get flammed here)

On shipping the trike back to England, I'm sure you can manage that without my help.

    Regardless, I wish you well.

Welcome to Progressive. Quote and buy online with America's #1 motorcycle insurance group.

Welcome aboard Eric,I'm sure with Buzzards help you'll work out your insurance while here. Either way you and you alone will have to decide what to trike... But remember, when your talking about a big V-twin or six cylinder Honda, fuel milage is not what some people think. My Motor-Trike gets no better milage than my Toyota automobile. (but it has a better stereo system). Have fun and enjoy.

I ride a Harley with a Lehman trike kit. I had a stage one setup done and which helped solve the heat issues. I ride with a club which the type of bike is not important, it is about the ride and last weekend rode over the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming. It was a great ride and when we gassed up, I was only using 2/10's of a gallon more than the two wheel Goldwings. I was really happy with that considering how much more wind resistance I have. I was also happy in that I was having to hit the brakes in the corners behind the two wheel bikes and stayed right with them all through the ride. I know in the states, when you look at resale values for used trikes, the Harleys hold their value. Ultimately the choice is yours, I suggest you ride both. I rode a Goldwing trike before i rode a Harley trike. I personally liked the better leg positioning of the Harley as far as rider comfort. The Hondas are great bikes though and very reliable. Shaft drive versus belt drive, independant versus straight axle, various degrees of rake, so many different variables and opinions, you will enjoy whatever you decide to ride.

If you buy something strange like I did, be prepared for insurance problems, progressive who has my scooter insurance would not insure the Westward Go-4, my Car insurance company insured is as a road going golf cart.

We use "Auto Owners Insurance" for cars and Harleys both. When we made my Fat Boy into a trike, our agent told us they only change the insurance based on the value of the add-on kit, and consider the vehicle still to be a Harley with just the kit added. No problems with making the change to our policy, and we have been happy with Auto Owners services, although we've only needed their help with auto repair, not motorcycle work.

    Default Insurance information

We checked around at Americade for insurance.

1--Allstate does not insure conventional trikes(2 wheels in back).

2--Foremost/Farmers gave a number to call for trikes(do not know number).

I called AARP who has a program with Foremost and got a price of $347 with
    100/300/50 and uninsured/underinsured and $500 deductable for a 2007GL/ABS California SideCar.

Now I am paying over $650 with Progressive.

I will be changing at renewal time.

Blue, that's pretty good savings. I know state to state rates are different and some companies will only write policies in certain states. We belong to AARP also but they could not beat Geico or Progressive here for me. You know several years ago there was a big PR campaign telling people to "shop around" for insurance rates. I guess it really is true. We all need to spend a little time investigating in order to save some money...

I had no problem with insurance for the trike from Progressive. I've used them for years with no problems.
