    Default Running Board question?

I’m starting to look at the GW Trikes and have seen several conversions, with & without the running boards. Since I work on a military base and we have several speed bumps to go over at the gates I was concerned about the boards scraping. Most of the bumps are “wide” (maybe 2 or 3 ft.), not like the “normal” ones you see in an apartment complex. Anyhow I just wanted to see what others have experienced with the running boards and scraping the speed bumps. Thanks ahead of time.

I have been over many, MANY speed bumps. Both the short and the long ones. I have NEVER scraped my boards.<br />

I have had ZERO problems with clearance on the "ground effects" aka running boards on a CSC trike kit.

In three years of coast-to-coast travels, we have encountered TWO speed bumps that scraped our CSC ground effects - one here in Killeen at a mall parking lot on a steep incline, and one at a new McD's near Monument Valley. The latter one was so high that cars had to divert, so we just went sloooooooooowwwwly and kinda slid over, with no damage.

Thanks all for the responses. When I look at the boards in the pics it just looks low, however looks are deceiving sometimes.

That's certainly true. But if you look closely you will see that most of them line up with the lower part of the fender. And that rarely, if ever, gets close enough to scrape across anything.

The only time ive had trouble scraping was on sharp corners on two wheels, never on three.

2004 GW1800 Champion - no running boards, but the belly pan seems to hang down quite a bit. I have run across quite a few speed bumps that have scraped the belly pan. Sounds horrific, makes Gloria cringe every time. I found if I run over speed bumps at an angle, we don't scrape. At 45° the front wheel goes over and comes off the bump about the same time as one of the rear wheels is climbing, and when that wheel comes off the bump the other one is climbing the hump, keeping the middle of the trike raised above the speed bump. Since doing this I haven't scraped the belly pan.

The EZ steer kit on my 97 GL1500A conversion comes with spacers as do all EZ steer kits. They are not long enough and the front end is down with about 5" ground clearance. I have looked at a Champion with EZ steer and it has more like 8" clearance. Look at pics of ANY Roadsmith conversion and the front end appears to be low or at least it does to me. I need to be careful going over speed bumps; you turn at an angle and go real slow. Take a look at various trikes and carry a ruler and see what the actual ground clearance is; usually will be lower towards the front because of the EZ steer kit installed if it is lower.
