    Default Tour Pak hinges

Installed a pair of the new Tour Pak hinges that Harley has and what a difference!

I could tell a big difference in the lid stability right off the bat and worth the cost just for that.

But the real shocker is in the looks. This is one of those little "final touch" items like the inner primary cover that finishes off an incomplete look that you really didn't even recognize until its done.

Went on a group ride today and every Harley rider noticed them immediately.

Best $50 I've spent with Harley in a long time.

A few months ago a friend came over and the first thing I noticed was his new hinges. Wham.. took a trip to HD. They are just the best!!

To put these things on you have to drill out the old hinge rivets from the inside. It takes a good sharp drill bit and a steady hand. If you slip off of the small rivet you will drill through the tour pack but not to worry. The new hinge is a little wider than the old and will hide a boo boo. (experience talking) I had one slip off that put a good mark on the inside but luckily didn't go through.

You will need to pull up the lid gasket a bit at the hinge to get to the two hidden rivets. Careful as it is glued down and will try to tear but with a little patience you will be successful.

Have an extra set of hands to hold the lid steady if possible. If not then do one hinge at a time. You will also need to make the tour pack holes a little larger so the new screw will go through as they are just a little bigger than the old rivet hole.

BT, it that about the way you see it?

PS.. they are not in the picture below. That was taken a day before I installed them.. yes, have to update.

    Here I am....again....reksul.

Besides the looks, are these hinges stronger and less prone to breakage and rattle than stock?

These have more beef to them and the look is second to none. The operation of the lid seems smoother as well.

As far as breakage or rattles.. hummm My lid has never rattled unless I forgot to latch it and the old hinge didn't break so I doubt this one will.

Reksul, you are right on regarding doing one at a time. I realized that AFTER I had finished. It would have saved a lot of time and been a lot easier. It also would rduce the risk of paint damage considerably since the lid would actually stay on the Tour Pak..

Also realized later that I could have done the job quicker and with less effort by just triming off the back of the stock rivets with the Dremel cutting wheel rather than drilling.

But the bottom line is that however you do it, its worth it.

reksul....about breaking. Yep, on the 2-wheelers where the TP is not mounted as solid as on a trike trunk, you get a lot of wear, stress and rattle...then they eventually break, I have replaced them on one guys bike twice now. It also depends on what you pack in there and how many times you have to open it. In my case, the wife pays no attention at all to posted weight limits. Her method of packing is to put as much as she can of whatever in the box and on top of the box. She always has to have something out of there around 20-times a day. I don't know what all she carries....I only have one spare set of underwear and some socks. Rest of it belongs to her!

The best way maybe for you to take a trip to HD to see them. The hinge is larger, the pin area looks to be more supportive and you won't have to change the air pressure after putting them on!

Can't help ya with the wifey.

    LOL

Dave.. I was too excited about the install to even think of the dremel. It would be a tough job to get the ones behind the gasket though.. Did you use the dremel for all the rivets? These rivets are stainless steel and a bear to drill. They spin easily but a good split tip drill bit will cut them OK. Just have to be patient.

Since I also have a lighted wing on the tour pack I had to do one at a time or un-wire the light.. only way to do that is to take the seat off and splice it back.. no thanks.

The second I saw them I had to pay the Harley tax and get them. Best add on for the money, IMO.

No, I didn't think ofthe Dremel until afterward and I have the light wing too and I wasn't about to attack the wiring.

It was the strong rivets that made me think about it. I did drill them, but it was slow and once they started spinning it was a bear to finish off. I couldn't do it on the top, but I was able to use a center punch to drive out the bottom rivets once they were drilled down.

Just like everything else on a Harley, it's an engineer on the fly adventure.

A great upgrade, no doubt. My on-line discounter has them for 38 bucks. One thing I did as well was to get rid of that stupid cable and put the ultra brace on there, love it. I'll look it up later....

From reading these posts, it would appear that they won't fit the 2004 Ultra classic??? Is that right.

Seems to be correct. Says 06 and later. There are others that sell a simular product but can be 3X more cost.
