Whole bunches in Texas: Mexia ( mah-hee-a), and Bexar County ( bear), are just a couple that immediately come to mind.
As we all travel around, we either pass through or wind up in a town that we're not "native" to and quickly get corrected on the right way to pronounce the (city, town, etc.) name. Here's three examples that we've run into, but I'm sure there's more that I'm still pronouncing wrong or haven't run across them yet.
Hurricane, UT...Her - a -kin.
Beatrice, NE ... Bee - a - triss
Boise, OK ... Boyce
Any others out there?

Is there a Boise OK?...If not, you are spelling ID kinda wrong!..Ha ha! And the ID pronounciation would be Boy-See..
Nope, it's in OK. Pronounced it like the "other" one and they jumped all over us. In the panhandle of Oklahoma.

There's is a method in their madness, The locals purposely mispronounce their towns name so they can tell who the tourist are, And adjust their prices accordingly.

There is a small town 30 miles west of Salt Lake City, Tooele (pronouced two-
ela). That place gets called many things, toolie, tahoola, tooelella. Dam unedumucated people!poof
Being that I'm originally from Long Island, NY, the correct way to say "Long Island" is "Long Guy Lend".
Bozo, do you agree? lol
Ok, you must come to Louisiana if you want to have a problem with town names.
Chopin = Show pan
Cloutierville = Clue che ville
Thibodaux = Tib a doe
Parishes - not county as in all other states
Ouachita = Wash a taw
Tensas = Ten saw
Family names are even worse.
Like
Hebert = A bear
Sanson = Saw saw
French Cajun influence is tough, especially when you have a cajun speaking it.

Illinois = Illinoy
Around the 4 states, (AR, MO, KS. OK) 2 towns stand out on the pronunciation - Nevada, MO and Miami, OK. They say Nuh-vay'-duh and My-am'-ah for those towns around here.

I grew up about 60 miles from Beatrice Nebraska and have a brother that lives there. The correct pronunciation is Be at trice. At least that's how I've always heard it pronounced. I've heard non natives say Be a trise, like a woman's name, but that's wrong.

I really like this thread. I think before I go on vacation, I'll check some of the cities I'll be going to just to make sure I get the names right - don't want to look like a rube.
Watch out going through Missouri or should I say Missoura. I live here and one time I will say Missouri and then sometime I say Missoura, don't know why it just happens.
Kuna, Idaho.....Q-nah (go figure)
Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho....Lake Pon-da-rayl

Our neighbors on both sides of us are native for a few generations to Anderson, MO. The family on one side of us says Missouri, and the family on the other side says Missoura. And, as Ed Hobgood noted, I know folks who use both.
