    Default rear cly. shut down

I have only had my 2013 tri-glide for about a week, it has 150 miles on it, and I am new to Harleys.
I was driving it two days ago, the temp was 65 degrees and no wind,
when I would stop at a red light, in aprox. 15 to 20 seconds I could hear a change in the idle, like one cly. not firing, it would be ok when I started moving, I have read about the engine idle temp. mgt. sys. saying it would do this when the eng. temp. reaches 284 degrees, does the eng. get that hot on a day that the temp. is only 65 degrees ?.. or do I have another problem ? or am I just being to picky because it new ?
    Thanks for any advice.

Sounds like it is operating correctly. Yes, they do heat up that fast, especially in stop and go traffic. Some would say to bring it back to the dealer and have them address the issue.

You can turn off the EITMS. Look in your manual for step by step instructions.

That is what is cutting off your rear cylinder at hot idle.

    Mr. Wizard,
If I turn it off could that cause some damage to the engine by overheating ?

what do most of you do ?

should it shut down the rear cly. with the outside temp. being only 65 degrees ?
I was expecting it shutting down around 90 to 95 degrees, not 65. .
but this is the 1st. Harley I have owned in 20 years, and they were older bikes. Thanks.

The rest of us don't have EITMS issues. They have been fixed via a visit to a customer friendly service department who took the time to find the real issue as to why your head sensor is kicking your bike into shut down.

Others have made the decision to tune their bikes and get rid of the hot stock calibration.

Either way you have an issue and something must be done. More than likely your dealer will say the same as some others, Normal... Well, it's not normal as you say when it's only 65* out. Take it to them and make your case... have them ride it then come back to the parking lot to see how long it takes to go into EITMS cut out.

I wish I could help you more but this just a simple fact... It's either the head temp sensor or an issue with the motor or there may be a new ECM flash they can provide under warranty to stop this problem.

Read as much as you can here. Go through the sticky's at the top of the Harley section. Before you know it you will be an expert !

The EITMS is a safety for the heads being hot. Things like blipping the throttle when stopped, idling to long, lugging the engine, are all causes for a high temp. Not saying the temp is real high, but you could have it looked at. There have been a few sensors that could have gone bad, but most times they are right on.
The engine is still tight also, being new, so be careful with the heat ! If you can, pull over & cool down, or ride more where you aren't in traffic as much as you can. Especially while you are breaking it in.
Also get rid of that ambient air temp gauge & install an oil temp gauge.

    Ride Safe !

Slou... I heard a nasty story from a local dealer around these parts... They hired a new prep guy and he forgot to check the oil before delivery. A few motors came back toasted. lboos is close to me. I'll do what I can to help him out.

Earl Small died a year or so back test riding his previously owned Helicopter but yes, he used to own them both..

Take it back to Cartersville and see their service dept first. Several guys I know go there and they rave about the SD Manager and his crew. Will bet they will drill down and find the cause for you.

    Thanks Mr. Wizard,
I live 2 miles from Earl Smalls Harley in Marietta, being as I bought it from them I was thinking about taking it back to them 1st, I have been asking about any problems to the sales people, maybe I should be talking to the maint. guys instead.
The bike runs great except for the cly. shut down. If it ever quits raining I'll take it to them, Thanks for all your help, does that sound like the thing to do at this point?
    thanks for any advice.

You can certainly do that... have just heard through the grapevine to take it to Cartersville first. Totally up to you.

I'm a few miles west of Killer Creek, email is in my profile if you want/need assistance with anything else.

    Just a suggestion,
Not sure how much experience you have with Harley Davidsons. They idle kind of rough. If you are used to riding Metric bikes the vibration of a Harley at idle can make you think something is wrong. I say this because we own and ride 2 trikes, an 09 and 11. We live in Southern California and ride also ride in Nevada and Arizona in the summer. The only time either trike activated the EITMS was Las Vegas in 118* heat and heavy traffic. It is very doubtful that yours activated in 65* weather unless you let it idle for a L O N G time or really lugged the engine.... OR there is something wrong.

You are under warranty, let the dealers do their thing. GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING. Especially if they tell you no trouble found. There are several people on this board that got that line several times THEN the dealer found something wrong. It is not up to you to find or fix warranty problems, that is what they get paid for.

    Good Luck

On YouTube look up Screwball Steve, I've got several riding videos. Look at how the bars shake at idle, this is perfectly normal for a Harley.

When I 1st got my 2010 it would go into EITMS in 70 degree weather after only being stopped at a stop light for a short time, can't miss whats happening when EITMS kicks in. I spent more time than I cared calling Harley and taking it to the dealer only to be told it was normal by both. The sound and feel kind of remind me of a large bore single cylinder older on/off road motorcycle. Since Wiz is close to the OP he'll help him get things straightened out.

thats normal, the hd trike will cut out the rear cyclinder while stopped to min the excessive heat from the motor.

what i did is invested in a new set of free flow pipes, put on a breather kit that pulled in more air and got rid of the cat converter that will cool things down a little + give ya a little more power and better gas mileage

Would like you thank all you folks for your comments, I'm new to these newer H/D's with all these hi-tech systems, and computers, I quit riding around 20-25 years ago.

I know the EITMS is there to help cool the engine on a hot day while in heavy stop and go traffic by shutting down the rear cly. at idle.

Does anyone know why the engine temp. [EITMS] was put on for ?...
was it's purpose to protect the engine from being damaged from hi heat ?
if so why would H/D even give the owner the option to disable it ?
what condition would you want to disable it ?

Or was it's purpose for creature comfort, to help keep the heat away from the rider's leg ?

sorry for all these new guy questions, just trying to learn from those who know .

It was added to create comfort, starting in 07 Harley started roasting the rider with the heat generated from the lean AFR. Lots of folks were raising the roof so they come up with the little plastic deflectors and EITMS.
