    Default The Best Kept Secrets...

Ok guys and gals, give it up. I've been riding my trike now for just over a year, and have been a faithful member of Trike Talk. I also tune in to VTX CAFE and VTXOA, as my garage houses a 2004 VTX 1800R with a Champion Kit, and a 2007 VTX 1300R with a Motortrike Kit. We love them both. But here is my question: I read all the time on the other sites about who has had an accident and why. Also, my newspaper is never shy about the details of some gruesome tale, where, for example, some two wheeled biker ended up in the back seat of an SUV without being invited in. Not to be funny, but you get my point. But I have never read anything about a trike being involved in such an event. So.... Who has had an accident on their trike, why did it happen, and how can we all learn from it? Share the details!

Had a rock wash off the tunnel on hiway to the sun & knock a chunk out of my helmet, also scared my little bride she almost broke my eardrums when she screamed. Did cross my eyes with all the noise.Glad we were moving very slow. Moral of story(always wear head gear, even on trike)

In May of 09 I was riding in town on a four lane street. I was in the inside left lane traveling at about 40 mph when a woman in the right lane suddenly took a left turn right into me.I struck her in the drivers door, not even time to hit the brakes. A witness coming from the opposite direction told me that I did a flip over the windshield, landed on my back on her hood and then flew down the street ending up 40 feet from the car. Tore my rotator cup up in my shoulder, broke a bone in my foot and of course some road rash. The trike was totaled but stayed upright. The investigating officer was a Harley rider and told me that he didn't think there was anyway I would have kept my right leg if I had been on a two wheeler. The trike was a Dyna Convertable with a Lehman Reneagade. I took part of the settlement and bought a new 2011 Tri Glide.

While I was no accident occurred my incedint involved road construction and traffic add to stop at a bottom of hill. I was about cars length behind the car in front of me, and we had been stopped a little while my hand was getting tired holding the clutch in and I was thinking of putting in nutural and until we go again. Then all of a sudden I here breaks that are locked up behind me. I glanced in the mirror and saw a car speeding towards me so I released the clutch and gunned it and pulled into the shoulder/ditch and pulled up beside the car in front of me. When all was said and done the car behind me gave a gentle tap to the car in front of me where I was no longer there.

Now I will never put my trike in nutrual and wait out traffic.

That's exactly what they teach you in the motorcycle course that you need to get your MC endorsement here in Florida. Great lesson to be reminded of; I'm guilty of doing it myself.

While I have yet to be in an accident I hear of many where a cage driver turned left in front and across the path of bikers who had no time to react. I now approach intersections very cautiously.

They taught it in Texas but bad habits happen over time and it was a short time.

Just yesterday, no accident but near miss. Was traveling on a 4 lane hwy. Having just left traffic light, was up to about 49-45 when the car in the inside lane pulled directly into me, forcing me to follow off on the shoulder to avoid. Thank God for Texas and their 6ft wide shoulders on most roads.

Haven't had an actual wreck on a Trike (...had some on motorcycles), but have witnessed three Trike Wrecks, including a rollover. Two were pretty much the same "dumped in the road from a side hit", "slammed T-Bone into a Car Door" fare with basically the same outcomes expected from the Riders having on Full Helmets, Jackets, Gloves as in a 2-Wheeler Wreck. Some "slight" Road Rash, and due in part to CE Armor in the Jackets, no broken bones....!!!.....Now, the rollover...one of the scariest wrecks I've actually witnessed. Rider and Passenger pitched off on first impact, then extremely lucky the Trike didn't land on Them as it took another "semi-airborn" one and a half flips...........Note to self: "Try" to never leave road and flip Trike..."and", WEAR GEAR.....

That's one of my fears here in my area of Virginia. We have NO shoulders. Mainly drainage ditches or embankments. You get forced off the road here on a bike or trike you'll be lucky if you see the next day.

Absolutely correct Sir! You have a chance of survival on most things-except a car turning right in front of you! I think intersections are the scariest part of riding on two or three wheels-hands down.

Yes leave it in gear but you have to be far enough back that you can go around.

Bump... Because I think it's important for all of us to learn from others, especially the new riders. So share your story if you have one. Thanks!

The key is INVISIBILITY. When my front tire hits the street, I am invisible. Trike, scooter, big bike, little bike. Drive as if no one can see you. Has worked for me for over 45 years.

Hmmm, nothing serious but I have "tagged" a picnic table, a pepsi machine, and my garage door. What I have learned is the Hannigan trike is wider than I realize! I hide scratches with chrome or pinstripes. Also I did run over my toe maneuvering the trike around the driveway while off of it.

Carbon One had his trike totaled out last fall...

    Wow! Great point. Tks.
By the way. Like the trike bicycle in your profile. I have a Sun recumbant two wheeler and three wheeler (for the wife).
