The best ride reference I've found though, is the "Motorcycle Journeys through....." series of paperback books. I have planned literally hundreds of regional rides using their information. Amazon.com has them for less than $15 each and each time we decide to head into another region of the country, I order one.
Our travels are based on the things we want to see and experience rather than the roads that get us there and it's usually at the fuel and food stops that the locals fill us in on what we should see and where we should go.
Rarely do we stay on the planned routes. I still rely a lot on dead reckoning and an occasional glimpse at the Rand McNally, to get me where I want to go.
Perhaps we could get a ride exchange going on this site.
