    Post Parking Info needed,

Can any of you expert trikers tell me if its ok to park in motorcycle bays, or if not, I park in car bays, do I take the ticket with me, and then challenge the fine, or what, if I leave the ticket on the trike its very likely to be nicked,
What does others do regarding this? find a free slot in a supermarket?
    Many thanks,xzqxz:

My trike is registered and considered a motorcycle by my state, NY. I have no qualms parking in spots that say m/c parking only. Nobody has ever commented.

Stormrider the answer is how they classify a trike in the UK. Most states here say that trikes are motorcycles therefor it would be okay to park a trike in a motorcycle bay.

    Hi Storm

I posted this in one or two of the UK trike forums and am still non the wiser! It seems to be very much down to each local council and often the individual warden.

Parking am I a bike or a car? - UK Triker Forums

Some places if its bike based its a bike and car based its a car others they are cars.

If spaces are marked for SOLO bikes then you probably can't.

Some folks write TRIKE and the reg no on the ticket to try and deter thieves. Others take a phone photo of the ticket on the trike as evidence to challenge if it gets nicked. It's a total lottery unless you can actually ask a duty warden.

You guys have such silly rules over there.

I guess if it's not classified as a bike then you can't - simple.
Are the spaces wide enough for a trike? I wouldn't think another biker would object.

Doesn't solo over there mean one? A trike is only one vehicle.

    GARYD,
I assume you have not been to UK or Europe. Things are different there and they have many-many rules which lots of people in the USA would cry foul over. But, hey, they were here first and we are just a mere colony.

Last year we stopped in Vegas on the way back from Cal. We stayed at one of the name brand Hotels. We parked in a stop for motorcycles. A security guy came by and said we could park there. We had to park in a car stop. Thats bull cause I didn't want cars parking next to my trike. They must have been watching me on a camera.

Regardless even though some states call/register a Trike as a Motorcycle it isn't, Plus one Trike will take at least two Motorcycle spaces.
When i'm on my Bike, I'll park in a bike spot, When I'm on my Trike I'll park in a car spot.

We haven't spoken the same language since the unfortunate recent colonial unpleasantness! Here is a translation.

In the UK a "Solo Motorcycle" is a motorcycle whereas a "Combination Motorcycle" is a Motorcycle and Sidecar.

A "Warden" is a parking enforcement operative, usually a recent immigrant, minimum wage, ex african dictator keeping his / her hand in by extorting as much money for the local council from innocent people going about their own business as possible.

Rosy, No, I have not had the privilege of visiting the old country. All my overseas trips were in the orient. Would loved to have traded though.

Rhino2 you're right, but the TG is not much wider then an Ultra or any other bike with saddlebags when it leans over on the side stand. I'd love to see 2 Ultras try to fit in the same width as a trike. Never happen.

Tinbasher, so is a trike considered a motorcycle or not? - it doesn't have a sidecar.... it's one solid piece.

Oh Garyd what a great big can of worms you just popped open!

Trikes are different things for different legislation. They can be "Light Cars"', "Motor Tricycles", "Motorcycles" and even "Quadracycles" for Construction and Use purposes and for the MOT (Annual Roadworthyness Inspection). For example trikes have to comply with the same trailer limitations as motorcycles so strictly speaking trikes in the UK cannot legally tow a teardrop or camper more than a metre wide..

Until this year both the Full motorcycle and the Full car licence entitled you to ride a trike but there was also a B1 category which entitled you to ride a trike only.

From January this year trikes became motorcycles for the purposes of licencing and you have to sit a test on a two wheeled motorcycle in order to ride one, unless you have a recognised disability when you are allowed to sit the test on a three wheeler.

You pay the same Road Tax as a Motorcycle.

One of the problems of having a history of road use that considerably pre dates the internal combustion engine is that our laws sometimes were drawn up for horses but now apply to motorised vehicles. For example we traditionally drive (ride) on the left so that two riders meeting on the road have their "Sword Arms" to each other just in case one is a Ner do Well!

I shall have to have a word with a warden, ( not prison warden) lol

Still a girls name when you speak it out loud over here

    Tinbasher,
Thank you very much for the history lesson. I have learned something I didn't know about why UK and their colonies drive on the opposite side of the road than most of the world. But, most of Europe went the other way, why?
    Thanks again.

    Good question Rosy.

I would make a guess that Napoleon had a hand in it as "Napoleonic Law" is the foundation for many of the European countries legal codes.

You can see why many of our former colonies stuck with our side but Japan has always been a curiosity especially given the fact that the USA practically rewrote their legal code.

Assuming you dont ride trike because of mobility problems and have a blue badge.Finding a car bay in a free carpark or supermarket is the easiest way to avoid a ticket.Maybe if you made a holder you could insurt ticket into and lock around forkleg, would avoid it getting stolen

The details may be different on your side of the pond, but the principles are the same. You can encounter the same number of unique variations in adopted laws and regulations as there are governments. Worse, yet, infractions are in the eyes of the enforcing officer. The ticket may get thrown out, but only if you are successful in contesting it before a sympathetic magistrate.
