Brakes on a Motortrike kit.

I have a 2002 Goldwing with a Motortrike kit. I had to have some bolts tightened while on a trip to North Carolina. The shop that worked on it had to take the wheels off to do the work and while they had them off inspected the brakes. He told me that I needed to get new brake shoes because the ones on it were glued on and they were not safe. He said that MT had recalled the brakes with glued on pads. Anyone know about this?

The big question is, does your trike have disc or drum brakes on the rear? If you have disc brakes, there was no recall on them. If you have drum brakes, depending on when exactly it was manufactured, it may have been part of a recall. They did a design change on their disc brakes and calipers several years ago that when to more of an automotive type brake pad for improved life. I'd recommend sending the folks over at Motor Trike an email for more information concerning your unit. Something like this, I've found you're better off getting the answers straight from "the horses mouth".

I was surprised to read that anyone is still using rivets to affix brake friction material to shoes? I don't recall ever seen disk brake pads riveted to the backing material. I thought all automotive (type) brake friction material was bonded/glued to the backing???

They are drum brakes.

They have not used rivets in years (30 ) maybe...

Motor Trike did a recall on drum brakes several years ago, they contacted all dealers and customers that had units affected by this recall. From what I'm told, the company that manufactures the brake shoes had 1 or 2 batches with a poor bonding, as a result, the brake linings would come off the back. Because the manufacturer make such large batches of brake parts, it was "impossible" to say just how many were effected. So, Motor Trike "back dated" by several months, and contacted thousands of customers to have them take their bike in, and have a riveted brake shoe put on in place of these to prevent any possible bonding failures. I think I got the story right from what I know of it. Once again, I'd recommend contacting Motor Trike directly with information. As you can see, the information here is comprehensive, and excellent, but everyone may not have all the "facts" like the company that builds them does.
