    Default Fly-By Throttle Grips

OK, this may be a dumb question, but I'm going to ask anyway. I know grips made for the fly-by throttle have a connection inside that the wire goes to. My question is can you convert an older version of a hand grip to work with the new throttle wire? H-D makes a great grip that's much "fatter" than any of their other grips and is nice and cushioned. I had it on my old Road King and loved the way it fit my hands. Problem is they never made it for the newer bikes. What I'm hoping is that there is some way to convert it so it would work on newer bikes. Can you get the connection inside the newer grips and install it inside the older ones? Maybe there's a lot more to the new grips than I know.

    Thanks.

The grip doesn't have any connection in them. They slip over. I just put some fatter grips on mine and the old grip slid off and the new one slid on.

I thought there was something inside at the base of the grip that somehow connected or worked with the fly-by-wire sleeve?

If you look at the end of the FBW unit it has gear teeth likewise the inside of the grip must have gear teeth that will mate up. So the grips must be designed for FBW.

So what you're saying is there's no way to retro fit an older grip. Was hoping someone might have come up with a way to do this, but maybe it's impossible.

Does anyone have any suggestions on fatter, cushioned grips to replace the stock TriGlide ones?

Take a look at these grips if you want a fat grip.

They are what I have on mine, & they are excellent construction. Very little metal. You get a sleeve for the FBW throttle here also. If you have any questions give them a call, they are great folks !pepper

I had those same grips on my 2004 Ultra. Wish they made them for these new ones also. Makes no sense why they would make them.

The throttle grip slips over a sleeve so it will rotate, and has a 'flange' on the open end that goes under the control housing. I think that if you used a sleeve with the FBW gear any grip should pull over.... Just thinking out loud

    Good Luck

Yeah you're right Steve, but the right (throttle) side has to be around 1.25" to go over the sleeve. the left side is 1". The sleeve is available from many sources. I got mine from Cool Sac when I got my grips. $10.

I like the looks of the braided grips, especially the two color option. I sent them an e-mail asking what the diameter was so I can get an idea on how much bigger around they are. Maybe you know offhand?

I will measure mine. I have the ones that are the "red steer" . They are quite large with the added leather to grip. The total grip is covered with leather, & well padded with a chrome cap on the end.

I will ger the measurements for you on mine. You can give them a call & get everything first hand if you like. They are great to deal with. They used to make grips for Harley, but Harley wanted cheap & they refused to do that.

I did send them an e-mail after asking you and should have contacted them first. They say the braided grips are 1.75" in diameter. Have to check what the stock ones are, but that sounds like it should be bigger. They do have some really nice looking grips on their site.

The ones that have the tooled leather on them are 1.889" on mine. I was looking at the braided also, but decided to get the tooled leather. the braided leather is also an add on like the tooled, but not as heavy.

I really like mine, as I can have something to hang on to. The edges of the leather catches on your hand & gives something to turn with. Also the size of the grip is just comfy for me. Might not be for everyone, but I don't like a lot of metal to hang on to. That braid will give ya a lot (1/2 wrap) to grip with also.

Thanks for the info. I had the H-D Black Cushioned Grips (56006-88C) on my older bikes and really liked the size of it. Was much more comfortable, for me, riding. Had some all metal grips once and hated them. Slick in the rain, hard as hell on the hands. Hoping the ones you suggested will work. Very reasonable price, so if don't work out, I'm not out a lot of money.

    Thanks again. pepperpepper

I liked the Kuryakyn, but they were for Throttle By Wire (TBW).
