    Default Hi All

So first off I want to say this is a great forum, I wish I had something like this when I was modifying my trike. As it grows hopefully it will help someone else realize they too can ride.

I had to modify my trike quite a bit to be able to ride it, electronic shifter, dual hand brakes and a rack of sorts to hold my chair and let me say it was all worth it because their is nothing like riding... Here's me and the trike just outside of Big Bend.

Thank you all for your support.

Unfortunately it took more than just will for me to ride...it took money too, I think I put about an additional $1800 into the bike before I could even take it out of my garage and that's with doing most of the work myself. Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining, I just want people in a similar situation to realize they won't be able to just hop on a trike and ride.

I added a pingel electronic shifter, dual brake kit to allow for both front and rear braking with the right hand, as well as a fabricated apparatus that allows my chair to ride safely on the back and yet make it extremely easy for me to put on and take off (my idea but not my handy work for the last one).

    Jeramie your trike looks fabulous.

You are right to remind us of some of the extra costs needed to allow us to ride. My adaptations cost about £4000 but I was lucky to find a ready adapted trike.

In the UK we have a disabled riders group called NABD (National Association of Bikers With a Disability) among other things they have a grant scheme which helps people with the cost of adaptations, this money is raised mostly by other bikers to help their disabled brothers and sisters. They also lobby and advise Government so that new laws don't disadvantage disabled riders. They have a few adapted "loaner" bikes that can be borrowed by learners until they get their own bikes. It really is a great organisation.

You might find their website interesting. NABD

Tom thanks for the kind words, yours is pretty sweet as well.

The UK sounds fairly progressive for disabled riders. Here in the states I can honestly say I don't know of anything like that, although we do have similar programs for caged vehicles... I say that and then I remember that I didn't have to pay sales tax on my Harley because I proved that I am "disabled" and that amount does help when you apply it towards modification cost.

Oh and I would love to see pics of where you put your chair on that beast.

I have a "cycle rack" that fits onto the towball to carry my chair. I can manage a little with leg braces and crutches so unless I am planning to to a lot do a lot of wandering around I tend to leave I behind. I will take some pics next time I have the chair on the back.

    Ride safe.
