another gravel in drive belt problem

just found out that i picked up a rock & it singed the center of the drive belt. on '09 tri glide. at 25k. dealer dound it at the 25k insp & recomends that it be replaced. haven't put it on jacks to inspect it yet. of course the ext. warrenty doesn't cover it.
guess that shoots the heck out of ("if any thing happens it covered"). will look for pulley damage too. need to go to the Baker 30T steel pulley & a aftermarket kevlar belt. anyone know the baker p/n for the pulley? will the 30BD-56F fit?and whats the best belt available?

I have not had any problems with the HD 30 tooth.

On my 03 Ultra, I had a large screw right in the middle of my belt almost from day one. It stayed there for the 7 years I owned the bike until I traded it in.

The screw was pretty much flattened and I didn't see any damage to the pulley. I have complete confidence in the H-D belt.

Good point....it falls under the catagory of "if it ain't broke don't fix it". It could last for years.

About 7 or 8 years ago I picked up a rock that punched a hole right in the middle of the belt on my FLHS. The dealer said there is no problem with running it as long as the hole isn't at the edge of the belt. The belt was still running strong when I sent the engine to the HD re-manufacturing program and they replaced it when the bike was put back together. The belts seem to be very tough, and able to take a pretty good bit of abuse. Then again, the MoFoCo does sell an emergency replacement belt, just in case. It is the most remarkable sight when one flies out from the rear end of a bike. The good thing is the belt is softer than a chain. Having one of those metal snakes loose a link and come flying at you is something a person won't forget.

those with a chain. in the 70.s i cut up a pop can top to measure 1/8"x1.2" & put it behind the chain master link so it wouldn't spread.

where was the rock sitting to cause this??

I guess you could let it run awahile but for piece of mind I would have it replaced for safety reasons also in case it does break apart..

BTDT - Not sure if that would work today. Pop/beer cans were much more stout than the paper thin aluminium containers we get today.

Eagle1, FWIW, The old belt would make a pretty cool belt for your Levis, if you're so inclined.
