Default Kuryakyn handlebar risers

Honda dealer called last week to inform me of a recall by Kuryakyn of recently installed handlebar riser kits. He was told to contact Goldwing owners whom they had installed riser kits for and have them remove the riser kits until a fix could be manufactured. The dealer was not made aware of the exact problem or how soon the fix would be available.

Also interested in how far back the recall would go. Doesn't seem to be anything amiss with the ones I got 3 years ago. "Recently installed" could mean something much different than "recently manufactured".
I wonder what the recall is for? I entered "Kuryakyn Goldwing handlebar riser recall" in the search engine, and here is the #1 result: http://www.triketalk.com/forum/honda-trikes/17129.htm
Yep, the thread you are currently reading is the first return, and the only one that mentions a recall.
So, is he pushing MLB or Show Chrome risers instead?

Skuuter to answer your question I believe they are recently manufactured riser kits. The dealer didn't go into detail if the riser blocks or the bolts were the problem. I sent the dealer a text yesterday and he is still waiting on Kury to return his latest call.
The owner of the dealership is who I'm dealing with. He has offered to remove mine and inspect the riser blocks and bolts and replace anything that looks suspect at no cost to me. He suspects that it may be a soft bolt issue. I'll post more later.

Skuuter - Seems someone at Kury put soft bolts in a few of the riser kits by mistake. There is a defined date range Kuryakyn is looking for. It is for recent installs only and the test is, if you've already thrown the box away with the date stamp, to re-torque the 8 bolts to 20 ft. lbs. If they don't break, you have the proper bolts. They tested mine yesterday and they were already at 30 ft. lbs. When I asked what were they going to do if mine broke, the owner said I could go to the showroom and pick out a free ride for the next week.

I searched the web for anything on this subject and the only thread I can find on this is on this website. The manufacturers website doesn't say a word about any recall.

How can we find out what date needs to be replaced? Mine seem to be fine but I am certainly curious.

If you don't have the original package to check the manufacture date, as I didn't, my dealer was told to do a twenty pound torque test. Sorry, I can't be of more help. You could call Kuryakyn and ask them what the date range was on the soft bolts for the riser kit. The Honda dealer just called me and said to bring it in to check the torque. I will give them a call to see if he remembers the dates.

Called the shop and the following is what he read to me from Kuryakyn:
Possible safety concern regarding part number 7437 GL 1800 risers. Packages stamped on the back with a date of 02/25/2013, 03/01/2013, 03/23/2013 may need to have the bolts replaced. As of today Kury had not sent him any further updates on how the problem was going to be addressed. "If you don't have the original package, re-torque the eight bolts to 20 ft. lbs."

kuryakyn handlebar risers #7437

Seems that there are a bunch of issues with the bolts. Kuryakyn seems to be willing to set back and wait until someone dies because of one of their product before they actually do something..

Go to http://www.safercar.gov/

do a search by name .. KURYAKYN and you will find that there are 4 recalls.
1 id for the backrest 1661
2 is backrest 1660
3 is the handlebar riser 7434]
4 is for passenegr floor board.

From reading on other sites it seems that the MAJORITY of bolts that are breaking are BOLTS and not the hex head that come with some of the riser kits. ( mine has the hex head but i dont want totake a chance on them so i am changing them out ASAP) Seems that they shear right at the head and you might not even know it until after the crash. They(K) do not seem to be taking this as a serious issue although several people have called and their response seems to be one of " so what" " send us a rec for when and where you purchased it" and then we will send you a replacement part... Certainly not the type of response that i would have expected considering the severity of the problem..... BUT if you are going to just go out and buy replacement bolts then make sure they are marked #8 on the head as that is the strength that you need, The bolts are M10 x 1.25 x 25MM ( 4 each) and M10 x 1.25 X30MM ( 4 each)The ratings on the metric is 10.9 which is equivelent to the 8 in usa.

I guess I just don't know how to search but I could not find anything about passenger floorboards. I purchased my risers in 2012 so they are before the dates and seem to be ok, but I think I will buy some grade 8 bolts and replace them one day anyway. I would sure like to find more info about the passenger boards, I put a set of Transformer Floorboards 7006 and would like to know if these are in the recall.

Chuck, thanks for taking the time to research this issue further. Hopefully it will keep a fellow rider from being injured.
Your spot on with the bolt dimensions, those are exactly what the dealer recommended had mine failed the torque test.

Thanks for posting the information for the floorboards. I guess I lucked out on those, I ordered mine in June 2013, the part number now is 7006, I hope these are ok. I suppose we will find out in a couple years. I don't know about you guys but I am going to have to put a lot of thought into it before I buy anything else with the Kuryakyn name on it. I don't believe they put a lot of effort into notifying customers. In their report to the safety commission in 2012 there were 7446 units involved and 1118 units inspected and remedied. There were 6328 units unreachable for inspection (reasons unknown) and 293 remedied before sale by distributors. Sounds like there are a lot of bad floorboards still out there.

When i chatted with Jann ( a guy) at kuryakyn he said that he would put my name on the list and replacement bolts would be sent out as soon as they had them on hand. No hastle or problems. I told him that i had bought mine in April and have had them installed for awhile and do NOT think there is an issue BUT sure dont want to find out while on the road that i just lost a handlebar.. He said that there is no real way that they know who bought a set of risers if they were bought somewhere else ( PS prices are better if bouht anywhere else & most of us shop around for the best deal RIGHT) but if someone calls then and asks for it they will send bolts out to them with no problem.... Nearly all of the time the bolts will snap off before they reach the 20 ft torque or will break within the first week... AS A FAIL SAFE i have just ordered a set of stock bolts from Cheap Cycle parts house and the 25 and 30 bolts from fastenal.com. Whickever comes in first is what i will use ( stock handlebar setup or w shims but NON Kuryakyn bolts) until after the new bolts arrive from Kuryakyn.... Got a 7K road trip and cant afford to be delayed or broke down somewhere out in the desert due to a soft bolt...

Its better to replace any ? items and not assume you are safe... This pertains to anyone that even suspects they have a ? bolt... If you bought prior to April then you are probably safe. parts bought after April might be old ( good stock ) or bad new stock. No way to tell other then the head maybe??? deforming around the allen wrench as you apply torque which would indicate softish metal...

I have 2 numbers.

Cant remember which one.. One muner got me to an answering machine that i left a message regarding the recall # 13E037000. So far no one from that number has returned my call.

The other number got me to a physical person who, when i expained what i was calling about, transferred me to Jan. It was an easy conversation, Much better than i had expected esp after reading comments on other sites about calling Kuryakyn regarding this bolt breaking issue.. BUT there again if you start the conversation with attacking them or whoever just happens to answer the phone then for sure its going to be a rough road to get them to do anything for you.. I played nice and then did too...

A few weeks ago, I sent an email to Kury customer service about the riser bolt issue. Explained I had just bought the trike (late May) and suspected the risers were put on during the time covered by the recall. I gave name, number and address. I hadn't heard back from them and was getting around to calling. Last night, I got a package from Kury, with the recall notice, new bolts and installation instructions. Good customer service and now I can ride easier. If you are concerned about this, well worth the time to email them.
