Default Extended Warrenty-to buy or not to buy

Okay so most of you would remember that I have a 2004 Harley V-rod trike that was converted to a trike (MotorTrike) in 2009. I purchased it last October with 17,000 miles on it and it now has 21,000 miles on it. Because the person that owned it before me did not drive it for three years and I started driving it every day it started having some engine leaks. And an exhaust leak. Over the last couple of weeks I have put Just over $1100 into repairs and it is now perfect. When I first sent it in for repairs he thought I had a couple of gaskets that were leaking but it turned out that my seals and hoses all over my engine needed to be repaired because of dry rot. I was told last week that I could take it now that it is fixed to Harley and have them inspect it and once inspected for $2,250 I can get a wheel to wheel warranty for five years unlimited mileage. $2000 if I did not want to have wheels and tires included, But since I also just had a new front tire put on it and a cost of over $300 I would definitely spend $250 at wheels and tires. I'm wrestling with the idea of doing this or not. Does anybody here have experience with Harley Davidson's extended warranty? The last time I bought an extended warrenty for a car (about 10 years ago) and when I needed any warranty work done there was always in a loophole that they never covered. This warranty looks pretty solid. Thanks.

You might have a tough time getting coverage since you triked it.

The wheel coverage is only for damage from road hazard not normal wear and tear. I would take a look at whats covered, there are always loopholes in them.

Make sure you get it in writing because the area rep may decline the warranty if you need it..
Happened to my Dad when he converted awhile back. One look and declined the warrenty repair..

    Good Luck

also the e/w doesn't cover adjustments.my drive belt was rubbing the trans, bigtime & went thru 3 inspections before I found that it was rubbing. so i paid the dealer for the adjustment. i still rubbs but not as bad. now i got a rock that wore the center out on the belt. so when i have that done i'm also haveing the 30T pulley installed. $711.00 quote dealer price.
OH!! did you have the water pump inspected?& have the cooling system flushed? if you can afford it i would buy the e/w, its only a 1 time expense. but thats me. good luck.
also do you drive the trike out of your local area a-lot? e/w is nice to have on trips.

Before I would spend that kind of money on the extended warranty I would talk to someone at HD Customer Service. I would bet since the bike has been triked they will not warranty it.

He's trying to bend you over or he's just ignorant of how it works.

Somewhere this week I read that you can get a cam change upgrade to a 103 and use your ESP. Sounds funny but then I recall my last bike, 97 Ultra got a change and the dealer used my ESP. This was done in 07. Just wondering since I have a 96 in my 09 Ultra Classic Lehman conversion.

I would doubt very much that you can get an extended warranty on a conversion. I have a 7 yr extended warranty on my trike. Two weeks ago I had over $4k work done. My 03 had the ESP and payed for itself. I even got an 5 year extension to that extension.
Granted most people don't need an ESP especially if you don't travel much.

My experiences have shown I'm better off with one.....and I'm sure glad I bought the ones I had.
Getting closer to forced retirement and I have piece of mine for at least 7 years.

If you can afford it and think you might need it - buy it - and forget what other tell you. It's your money.

I had jap bikes for 30 years and Harleys for almost 30 years and only needed the warranty twice. It is a mechanical device made by humans so naturally it can go boom. Hell, even Rolls Royce's can have a problem.
    Your call.

Save the $2,250.00 to pay the lawyer when you try to force them to honor the original warranty.

I only paid $1700 for a 7 year ESP and it paid for itself - everything from tourpac latches to starters and a bunch of electrical problems on the 03 Ultra.

Seeing all the problems TriGlides are having I figured it would be in my best interest to purchase an ESP for it too. So far with the trouble I've already had, I'm glad I have the ESP on the TriGlide.

I have never once had a problem with a dealer honoring the warranty. The brochure they give out tells you exactly what is and what is not covered. There's no guesswork.
Now if you're talking about a non Harley warranty, then you may have a point.

And giving $2250 to a lawyer doesn't guarantee satisfaction either.

It's like any kind of insurance - you are betting that your bike is going to break down - to me that's peace of mind. And untill they make a Harley that will never break down there will be a need for an ESP.

For all you mechanics, you don't need it, but don't go telling others without that skill that they don't need it.

Even being a mechanic you still have to pay for the parts. That doesn't take long to cover the cost of the extended warranty......

I had an 08 Ultra with a Lehman kit and I had an extended warranty on it. I bought it new from a Harley dealer who had three Ultra's kitted. I never had a problem using the extended warranty. The stator went bad and was replaced along with the radio for $50. When I traded it in on my new trike, I got money back for the unused portion of the extended warranty. I was told that you can get an extended warranty as long as your mileage is under 75,000 miles and your bike passes their inspection. It's great peace of mind.

My story is different. I bought my 06 Electra Glide Lehman conversion trike from FTW Harley last year with only 5000 miles. Tried to buy the extended warranty but the dealer said that H-D wouldn't approve it so I couldn't get it. Should of walked away. Battery had to be replaced after 4 months $180. Road great until my wife and I got stuck 100 miles from home. Towed it to the dealer and they replaced an injector wire and wire to the ECM. $466 plus 8 days to fix. Going to buy a new TG from a different dealer this week. I will buy the extended warranty.
