    Default trike expert needed

hi guys, I am looking for a real trike mechanic. I am sick of all the so so's who think they know about trikes but after listening to them you don't believe a word that is coming out of their stupid mouths. I have been to at least 25 Harley dealers across the country and have yet to find one of them who really knew trikes. I realize opinions are like a-holes and everybody has one but there must be someone who really knows what I want out of my ride and knows what I need to get it. I just love when I go to a dealer and he starts looking up and reading parts catalogs to try to figure out what I need for my trike. all I am looking for is a little more low end torque for my 2007 flhtc converted trike. I have heard and read all about cams, sprocket changes, air cleaners, pipes, etc. etc. but nobody can tell me what is deffinetly going to work. my engine is stock with a fuel tuner and runs great but in the hills I do way to much shifting, especially with two up. what I am asking for is some reliable person I can talk to and get some honest answers without a sales pitch. I live in Fl. but spend summers in Pa. I am not a speed freak and don't care if my speedo is a little off, just looking for less shifting if possible.

I am by no means an expert on Harleys. But my thinking is: If you add more weight, you need to add more cubes to compensate.

First step (and fortunately one of the more affordable mods) is to change your front pulley from 32 tooth to 30 tooth. That will require you to also change the rear drive belt down by one tooth (unless your trke has a lot of extended adjustment to tighten up your drive belt). Bottom line parts cost should be under $300 if you shop around (and be careful to get good quality stuff). Labor will vary, but should be in the $200 range if you use a private reputable shop (not a HD dealership).

Absolute best bang for the buck, and will show an immediate 'kick in the butt' without actually breaking into your engine or tranny.

I'd try that first and I bet it will solve your problem without going further. In my book, engines pulling trikes are always best left in stock condition internally, but geared properly. Next you can look at a less restrictive exhaust (no catalytic converter), but you need to be sensitive to your warranty implications once you start those type mods.

All statements are my opinions only, but I will offer a full refund for my payment if you're not satisfied. And this site does truly have a large panel of experts - you just have to filter until you recognize them (and I don't necessarily claim that I'm one of them, but I've fielded a few trikes of different styles).

    Good luck.

What he just said! Bang for your buck, changing the gearing will make a HUGE difference... Harley learned a lot with the 07-08 models.. The did a 32 tooth front with a 66 tooth rear... They got a LOT of complaints... In 09 they went to a 68 tooth rear with the 6 speed, which helped.. But that 30 tooth front will make a world of difference..

Like he mentioned, quality parts make all the difference on this.. Don't settle for a "better price". In a short time, you'll get a large number of replies from mechanics, as well as owner's that have "been there, done that"..

thanks guys, honesty is always my policy and I appreciate yours. what you say makes sense and when I get back to Fl. I will go to my mechanic and have him change the gearing, hopefully that will suffice me.

One tip you might want to consider if you do the pulley/belt change. The belt will be one tooth shorter than stock, so it will likely be special ordered (readily available, but not usually in stock at most shops). Considering that, I ordered an extra belt to keep with me when traveling so I won't get stuck for a day or two if I have a belt failure while traveling. The belt should run about $130-150, so you can decide for yourself if you want that extra security.

Hey!!! I have a 2011 road glide motor trike. I had a cam (570)put into my trike and now I am having trouble when taking off from a stop. At times the motor tries to stall (just like taking off in second) unless I feather the clutch, which is not good for the clutch and it looks and sounds like I don't know how to drive. I have been told that I need to increase the rpm's by changing the front sprocket(compensating sprocket). I am read to pull my hair out. It looks like my trip to Sturgis was left at the last stop sign. Is their any one that can help? Down and out in Milwaukee.

Who's 570 cam did you have installed? is your engine 96"? what tuner and other modifications did you have done. I'm leaning towards you having more cam than your engine needs.

Before I had my TG I had a 2007 FLHTCU. It was called a POSE or Police Officers Special Edition. So, that should be close to what you have. Was a Motor Trike conversion.

I knew I would trike it sooner or later so I prepared the POSE before triking. Here's what I did.

30 tooth front belt pulley change... that's mandatory.
    Open air cleaner
Andrews 26H cam for bottom end grunt and great midrange on the stock 96".
    TTS Tuner
I had Rinehart duals so I was stuck with that, the tune, cam and gearing change made up for any torque loss when running true duals. Stock pipe with the Y rear pipe had decel pop issues.
I did a SE spring and Energy +1 clutch disc change.

Many here saw her and a few rode with me. There is a picture of here before and after the conversion in my albums pic folder.

No downshift issues when riding the mountains even two up, MPG was good. I had two calibrations I ran. Local and Trip. Trip was leaned out a little in the cruising range AFR's and I could get over 40 MPG HWY.

There's not much else to waste money on or time beating around from one person to the next. What you read above is fact.

I'll also give you a money back guarantee for what this advice cost you.
