Thread: change tranny sprocket

    Default change tranny sprocket

    I want to change the tranny sprocket in my 2007 flhtc from a 32 tooth to a 30 tooth. my mechanic says this is a monstrous job and says he has to tear the tranny completely apart, take off the starter, and all sorts of other stuff, is this truth or all BS.

    Your mechanic is a sissy, and mustn't know what he's doing because you don't have too take the transmission apart. Yes the starter has to be unbolted and pulled back, this takes about 2 minutes to do. If you haven't read it already you can see what it takes to change the sprocket on a Triglide here http://www.triketalk.com/forum/harley-trikes/7642.htm. Depending on who makes your conversion will decide if you will need a different size belt.

    If all they have to do is swap the sprocket I'd say 4 - 6 hours.

    why not change the drive sprocket instead, i did the math and you should check this out with someone else, my 01 ultra runs a 24/37 primary and 32/70 belt. if you change the tranny sprocket from32 to 30 you get .0625 more revs [+200 rpm at 70 mph] change the motor sprocket from 24 to 23 you get .0588 more revs [+185.6 rpm at 70 mph]. hope this helps

    2007 - present touring has a totally different primary than 99 - 06 touring does, the engine mounting, way it gets oil from the oil bag and transmission are also different and not interchangeable between 07 and later and 06 and earlier. Only primary options are Evolution Industries 49 tooth ring gear or their engine sprocket which does away with the compensator. Doing away with the compensator is a dangerous move, its one sure way to twist the splines on the crankshaft or shift it.

    your mech is a few bricks short of a full load

    You can, just depends on how much you want to take apart the rear section of the trike to get at the sprocket. On some trikes it would be more work than taking apart the primary.

    A friend and I changed the tranny sprocket to the 30 tooth one used in the t-glide. Took us about 2 hours, but it is something we are familiar with so it went fairly quick. Good luck.
    My ride is a 2008 Harley FXD with Lehman conversion dubbed "Trilogy".
